Phillies 16-2 Marlins (September 6, 2024) Match Report

MIAMI — Trea Turner was one triple away from cycling, Kyle Schwarber hit his 33rd home run and Bryce Harper had three hits to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 16-2 on Friday night.

Johan Rojas hit a career-high three doubles and Kody Clemens also had three hits for the NL East-leading Phillies, 85-56, eight games ahead of second-place Atlanta in the division. Philadelphia scored a season-high 22 runs and scored a season-high 22 hits.

Zack Wheeler (14-6) threw six innings with one run. The right-hander allowed two hits and struck out seven players. He retired the first 10 before Connor Norby singled in the fourth inning.

“These types of games are tough, but at the same time you have to go out there and throw,” Wheeler said. “I’ll take any run support I can get.”

For Rojas, it was also the first game of his career in which he had multiple extra-base hits.

“The most important thing is that we won,” Rojas said through an interpreter. “The rest will depend on how we compete. We will always do our best.”

The Phillies scored seven runs in the first two innings against Marlins reliever Austin Kitchen (0-1). Harper, Bryson Stott and JT Realmuto hit three-run RBI singles in the first inning, and Turner hit a two-run home run in the four-run second inning.

“Getting up early is always good, of course, but from then on, I felt like every inning we had guys on base,” Turner said. “Good at-bats from everyone. Sometimes you can’t control all those things, but if you’re relentless and you keep it up the whole game, I think that’s really good.”

Realmuto hit two singles and had two RBIs before leaving the game in the fourth inning with a bruised left knee. In the second inning, he fouled off a pitch with his knee and limped away from the box before finishing the at-bat with a single. Replacement Garrett Stubbs came in as a pinch hitter for Realmuto, and manager Rob Thomson had already scheduled him as the starter for Saturday.

Otto López hit a multi-run double in the fourth inning that put Miami on the scoreboard.

Philadelphia extended its lead to double digits with three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Rojas scored two runs with his second double in the fifth inning, then Schwarber increased the lead to 14-1 with a 434-footer to right-center field in the sixth inning.

“It was a really good offensive night,” Thomson said. “We saw a lot of shots.”

Kitchen allowed seven runs and nine hits in two innings. Edward Cabrera, the original starter for Miami, was briefly removed from the roster because of migraine-like symptoms. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker learned 90 minutes before the game that Cabrera could not pitch. Schumaker also said Cabrera went to a nearby hospital for observation.

“We had to adjust and play a bullpen game,” Schumaker said. “It was a tough situation for our bullpen. They did their best. Things didn’t go the way we wanted.”

Marlins outfielder David Hensley pitched the final two innings and allowed two runs in the ninth.

Before the game, retired Marlins outfielder Jeff Conine threw the ceremonial first pitch to his son, Griffin, whom Miami promoted from Triple-A on Aug. 26 and who started in right field on Friday.

TRAINING ROOM

Phillies: 3B Alec Bohm (left hand injury) was placed on the 10-day injured list and infielder Buddy Kennedy was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Bohm injured his hand while batting in the Phillies’ game against Atlanta on Aug. 29.
