Pearl Jam’s “Stranglehold” cover is sure to make Ted Nugent angry

The best cover songs are always those when the band doing the cover puts their own spin on a well-known song. Think Ghost’s cover of “Here Comes the Sun” or Johnny Cash’s take on the Nine Inch Nails song “Hurt.” But what we have here is a cover that is sure to anger the original artist, as historically left-leaning rock band Pearl Jam turned “Stranglehold” by the famously right-leaning Ted Nugent into an anti-gun song.

During the band’s performance in Baltimore last night, guitarist Mike McCready began playing the iconic riff from The Motor City Madman’s 1975 single, after which frontman Eddie Vedder began singing the following before the band launched into “Even Flow.”

“I don’t own a gun, I never want to own a gun. / I don’t own a gun, and I never want to own a gun.”

This is not going to go over well with Uncle Ted. The guy is known for being pro-gun and conservative as hell. He is a huge fan of former President Donald Trump and has threatened people like former President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton with various forms of violence in the past. He is also an extremely vocal gun rights advocate and hosted a show on the Discovery Channel called Ted Nugent’s Gun Country.

Oh yeah, he’s also a terribly transphobic, racist, violent guy who allegedly shit his pants to avoid the draft and adopted a 17-year-old girl to marry, so that’s something too.

The fact that a couple of Pacific Northwest liberals took his popular song and turned it into an anthem against what he loves more than being a toady for El Trumpito probably won’t sit well with the 75-year-old rocker.

We’ll just have to wait and see if and when old Teddy responds. I’m sure it will be reasonable and rational…
