Paul Rudd and Jack Black talk about their leading roles in the new “Anaconda” film

According to an insider familiar with the project, Paul Rudd and Jack Black are in initial talks about their leading roles in a new “Anaconda” film at Sony.

The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent writers Tom Gormican and Kevin Ettin wrote the screenplay, with Gormican directing. Snow White and the Huntsman and Tomb Raider screenwriter Evan Daugherty wrote the previous draft of the screenplay.

Brad Fuller and Andrew Form produce under their banner Fully Formed.

The film is expected to be neither a sequel nor a direct remake, but rather a reinterpretation of the film, which grossed around $137 million at the box office worldwide and was despised by critics and audiences alike at the time.

“Anaconda” was released in 1997 and starred Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube and Jon Voight.

The film also stars Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, Kari Wuhrer, and Jonathan Hyde; on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a critics score of 40% and an audience score of 42%.

The original followed a documentary film crew traveling through the Amazon when they encounter a stranded, as it soon turns out, obsessed hunter (Voight) who was searching for a legendary – a giant – snake that gave off real white whale vibes. The hunter then takes the crew’s expedition on his own quest, dragging the filmmakers along to deal with a homicidal maniac and face the giant water boa hell-bent on killing them.

Gormican most recently wrote “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” for Netflix. He is repped by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment.
