Paul George of the 76ers gives a realistic view of his TV appearance at the NBA Finals

Newly signed Philadelphia 76ers forward Paul George has been hosting a podcast for some time now, but even he knows that covering the NBA Finals on television is a whole different ball game.

In a recent interview with Charles Barkley, a longtime member of TNT’s Inside the NBA, George admits that it’s a very different feeling to talk about the NBA on television. His reaction came after Sir Charles made a comment about former NBA players coming on their show acting stiff and awkward, as if they’d never appeared on TV before.

“I love having brothers on TV. I love it. There aren’t many jobs you can do when you’re retired,” Barkley said during his appearance. “If you get lucky with one of those TV jobs, you’re set for life. So we’re constantly bringing guys in and sitting there thinking, ‘What the hell?’ Dude, you’re so funny, you’re cool to be around. Why are you nervous on TV?”

In response, George said, “I did Game 3 and Game 4 of the Finals. I was like, I’m comfortable doing Podcast P and I’m comfortable talking on camera and all that shit, right. Then I go on, Game 3, Game 4. Similar to what you’re talking about, I’m like, ‘Man, this shit is different.'”

Podcast P is presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment.

“You don’t talk any differently on TV,” Charles Barkley continued. “You just have to relax and act like you’re sitting with your guys. That’s all you have to do. Just talk basketball. So it was a quick adjustment. They say, ‘Hey, man, we didn’t bring you here to annoy the hell out of people. Talk basketball.’ And I say, ‘OK, I’m happy now.'”

George also shared valuable advice he’s received about covering games. “At my second game, Kendrick Perkins was sitting to my left. And that was the best advice he gave me. He said, ‘Man, you’re not a sports analyst. You played the game yourself. They want to hear your own perspective as a basketball player.’ And when he told me that, my experience was much better than the first game. That helped me a lot.”

“Because I thought, I’m going to watch the game, I’m going to take stats, I’m going to do all the analysis,” the new 76ers star added. “I mess it up because I wanted to do that part so well. But when he told me, ‘Man, just talk basketball,’ that really helped me.”

After Paul George signed with the 76ers during his free agent period, the nine-time All-Star is looking to add his two-way versatility to the new Big Three with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Will a fresh start on a new team in a new conference help George make his first Finals appearance as a player?
