Patrick Mahomes donates $5 million to Texas Tech for stadium and football center projects

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes donated $5 million to his alma mater, Texas Tech, on Thursday to fund the $242 million renovation of the south end zone at Jones AT&T Stadium and the Dustin R. Womble Football Center.

The school in Lubbock, Texas, said it will name the football center’s walk-through area, the quarterback’s meeting room and the offensive coordinator’s office after Mahomes, who played for the Red Raiders from 2014 to 2016. He declared for the NFL draft a year early and the Chiefs selected him in the first round in 2017.

Mahomes, a two-time league MVP, has since led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles, including the last two. He is a three-time Super Bowl MVP, a two-time first-team All-Pro and was selected to the Pro Bowl for the sixth consecutive year last season.

“There is no better ambassador for Texas Tech sports than Patrick Mahomes,” Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire said. “He is arguably the best brand in sports, not only because of his success on the field, but also because of what he and his family do off the field.”

Mahomes’ impact on the school was already evident at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Texas Tech agreed to a 10-year partnership with Adidas in July to become the official apparel supplier. As part of the agreement, the company has released co-branded Texas Tech and Mahomes apparel featuring its signature “Gladiator” logo. That logo is now painted on the stadium turf along with the Adidas logo after the NCAA changed its rules to allow corporate logos on the field.

Mahomes also frequently attends Texas Tech games, returning during the Chiefs’ off week for the past three seasons, including in 2022 when he was inducted into the school’s Ring of Honor and Hall of Fame. Mahomes also shows up at baseball and basketball events, including the Big 12 Tournament, which is held not far from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

His latest donation to Texas Tech brings the total amount raised by the school for its stadium and football center projects to $115 million.

“When we launched this campaign, Patrick was just a freshman, and now it’s fitting that we approach the end of the campaign with a gift of our own,” said Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt. “We are so proud of Patrick for all he has accomplished and how he has continually supported Texas Tech on a global level.”
