Blake Cashman was a former quarterback for Eden Prairie High School. After graduating, he stayed in the Twin Cities and became a standout player for the Minnesota Gophers. He now plays professional football and is an MLB starter for the Minnesota Vikings.
He’s already made a name for himself locally, but in his first season back home, Blake’s impact on the Vikings is already being felt. Now the Vikings are off to a surprising 2-0 start, and Cashman is starting to attract national attention, too.
The Pat McAfee Show loves Blake Cashman
On Tuesday, Blake Cashman was on the Pat McAfee Show for a film analysis that included former NFL players Darius Butler, AJ Hawk and McAfee. They came up with different ways to describe the Gopher turned Viking. Butler called Blake “an animal.” Pat settled on “Cash-man.” That’s content, right here.

Darius Butler: After the snap, they’re going to cover two. Watch those two defenders underneath, starting with Cashman. He’s the guy highlighted on the left. Just watch the sky before the snap, boom. So after the snap, we’ve got a 2-high bowl, and just watch those defenders underneath. Watch that right hash, boom. I mean, that’s a great break. “I know AJ (Hawk) appreciates that — great eyes, great balance. Look at the top.”
AJ Hawk: You practice that all day, but as a DB and a linebacker, you know that’s what you’re doing — you break on intents. You read the quarterback, then break on intents and cut underneath. That’s great. That’s something you work on all the time, a fundamental situation.
Pat McAfee: What did Purdy say about this defense?
Darius Butler: “This plan is crazy, bro.” And you see it right here from behind. You see it from Purdy’s perspective – great drop, breaks on purpose. They always talk about picks and throws: gotta catch it, gotta have it. If you get that opportunity in the game, you’re giving Sam Darnold great field position here.
AJ Hawk: Cashman had 13 tackles.
Darius Butler: Cashman… is an animal.
Pat McAfee: He is the “cash man”.
Pat McAfee Show
It’s fun to watch three former professional football players analyze footage and focus on the small details of the game. Darius Butler had a successful career as a safety. AJ Hawk is one of the Green Bay Packers’ best linebackers of all time, which is saying something.

Of course, Cashman did not start his NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings. In 2019, he was drafted by the New York Jets. In March 2022, Blake was traded to the Houston Texans, where he stayed healthy and got much more playing time.
Blake, the “Cash Man”, returns to the Minnesota Vikings
In 2023, he had his breakthrough season, collecting over 100 tackles, more than in his previous four seasons combined and double his previous season record (40) that he set as a rookie with the Jets. Last offseason, he got his first chance at free agency and signed with his hometown Vikings. The rest is (hopefully) history.

Cashman is finally getting the recognition he deserves for his performance, and hopefully we’ll see even more attention on him as the season progresses. He’s been one of the biggest buys of the offseason so far. The Minnesota Vikings play his former team, the Houston Texans, on Sunday.
Blake Cashman and Ivan Pace are not fooled by the zone action (could be a stunt) and correctly diagnose the split action.
