“Parks and Recreation” star Aubrey Plaza suffered an unexplained stroke at the age of 20: “I was paralyzed”

Aubrey Plaza talks about the “wild” experience of suffering a sudden stroke at a young age.

In a recent interview on Sirius XM’s “Howard Stern Show,” Plaza said she suffered a stroke at age 20 that left her briefly paralyzed and unable to speak. According to the actress, the stroke came suddenly and she said, “It happened mid-sentence.”

“I took the train to Astoria to have lunch with my friends and went into their apartment – I hadn’t even taken off my jacket – and it just happened,” she said on the radio show, adding, “It was wild.”

She continued: “I was paralyzed, but actually only for about a minute. I lost my motor skills for a very short time. The craziest thing was that I forgot how to speak.”

The actress has previously spoken openly about her stroke, telling David Letterman during an appearance on the “Late Show with David Letterman” in 2011: “It was a pretty crazy thing.”

At the time, the actress wasn’t sure what caused the stroke. She told the talk show host that doctors had different ideas about what the cause was. Some thought it was hormones, while others thought it might be related to her migraine attacks.

“The right side of my body stopped working and I looked at my arm and thought, ‘Whose arm is that? It’s not connected to my body,'” she explained. “I kind of passed out and couldn’t speak. For the next few days I suffered from expressive aphasia… My friends actually thought I was joking because I kept making weird jokes and said, ‘Stop it.'”

She went on to tell the talk show host that paramedics thought she had been using drugs since she was a child, and the possibility of a stroke wasn’t the first thing that crossed their minds. The Parks and Recreation star explained that she was terrified inside and wondered if she would ever be able to speak again.

In a 2017 interview with NPR, Plaza revealed that at the time she continued to suffer mild strokes, called “transient ischemic attacks,” which she described as “tiny little strokes.”

According to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, there are two main types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke occurs when part of a blood vessel is blocked, while a hemorrhagic stroke occurs when a blood vessel leaks or bursts.

“I was paralyzed, but only for a minute or so. I lost my motor skills for a very short time. The craziest thing was that I forgot how to speak.”

Symptoms of both types of stroke include weakness or numbness in the face and extremities on one side, difficulty speaking, confusion, severe and sudden headaches, and others.

Plaza recently promoted her upcoming project Megalopolis, which also stars Adam Driver and Shia LaBeouf. The film is about an architect who can control time and works to rebuild the destroyed metropolis called New Rome and turn it into a utopia.
