Parking, charging, saving: Solar carports are the perfect complement to electric cars

Solarway offers a powerful solar carport for under 4,000 euros.

(Solar Path)Solarway offers a powerful solar carport for under 4,000 euros.

Solar carports use solar modules instead of conventional roof coverings to either charge electric cars directly or feed electricity into the home grid. While such carports usually cost several thousand euros, the solar provider Solarway is currently offering an attractive model at a reduced price.

For links that start with “To the provider” or “To the shop”, we may receive a determination.

Solar carports can quickly become expensive, especially if you have them built by a solar installer. As the solar provider DZ4 calculates on its website, they cost around 15,000 to 30,000 euros. For that, customers get a module output of 5 kilowatts. Compared to normal roof systems, which cost an average of 20,000 euros for 10 kilowatts and 10 kilowatt hour storage (see our article How much does a 10 kW system with storage cost?), a carport is also very expensive.

But there is a way to reduce the price: build it yourself. The biggest costs are usually incurred by tradesmen and if you are handy, you can save a lot. And it is allowed. The only thing that needs to be done is an electrician to connect it to the power grid.

A current offer from Solarway shows how much you can save. The specialist dealer offers a solar carport with 5 kWp output for 4,499 euros in the sale. Normally, the set of ten modules (500 Wp each) plus frame would cost 4,799 euros. That was pretty cheap.

The solar carport from Solarway offers enough space for a vehicle at 2.8 meters wide. In addition to ten large modules and the frame, the set also contains the fastening material and assembly instructions. What is missing, however, is the inverter, wall box and AC cable. According to Solarway, this is due to the individual application options that the carport offers. Therefore, you have to put these components separately in the shopping cart. But you can find everything in the Solarway shop.

Solar Carport from Solarway: These are the technical data

The ten modules, each with 500 Wp output, deliver a maximum of 5000 Wp together. This high output per module is not due to the special technology, but because the panels are a little longer and wider than average modules. The modules from the JAM66S30 series come from the manufacturer Ja Solar. The Chinese company is considered the world’s leading manufacturer of solar products. The modules are equipped with a stable aluminum frame.

The modules use PERC technology (Passivated emitter and rear cell)This increases the efficiency of photovoltaic modules by reflecting some of the light that reaches the back of the cell without generating electricity back into the cell. This is made possible by a special layer on the back of the module. PERC modules are currently the most widely used module type with a market share of 80 percent. The efficiency of the solar panels is 21.1%. That’s good, but it can be even more efficient. The most powerful modules available currently achieve a maximum of 24%.

The manufacturer provides a 25-year linear performance guarantee and a 12-year product guarantee on the modules. The guarantee for the carport aluminum construction is 5 years.

The sturdy aluminum carport frame measures 575 x 440 x 407 cm (LxWxH) and offers space for a vehicle width of up to 2.8 meters. For comparison: Large SUVs such as the BMW X5 measure 2225 centimeters wide. The construction gives the carport an inclination angle of 20°. The angle for flat roofs is always between 5° and 15°. This makes optimal use of the space and minimizes shadows. An angle of 20° to 30° enables better self-cleaning through rain. The angle of the carport is also optimally chosen.

Unfortunately, the wallbox and inverter are not included in the set. However, you can order these components directly from Solarway. These include the Fox ESS EV wallbox for 549.99 euros and a Deye inverter from 1,825 euros.
