Almost as quickly as they arrived in Paris, the 2024 Summer Olympics are coming to an end. It seems like only yesterday that Céline Dion’s surprise appearance atop the Eiffel Tower capped off a rainy opening ceremony that saw athletes from around the world arrive at the Games in a boat parade down the Seine.

Highlights included incredible performances by stars like Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky, Noah Lyles and Stephen Curry for Team USA, as well as some big surprises, such as the bronze medal for the U.S. men’s gymnastics team.

This year’s Games also saw controversy, with American gymnast Jordan Chiles losing her bronze medal in floor exercise and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif winning gold after a gender controversy made headlines around the world in the middle of the Games.

Next on the Olympic calendar are the 2024 Paralympics, scheduled to take place in Paris from August 28 to September 8. The next Winter Games will be held in Italy in February 2026 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, and the next Summer Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028.

Date: Sunday, August 11

Live25 updates

  • Now the show is about to begin. The lights are out in the Stade de France and the orchestra on the pitch has agreed to begin playing.

  • Now the Olympic volunteers are making their big appearance and will be honored at the closing ceremony. According to NBC, more than 45,000 people have volunteered to make the games happen in Paris.

  • Hassan can hear the Dutch national anthem being played in her honor, in front of the entire athlete delegation and the tens of thousands at the Stade de France. An incredibly cool moment.

  • The parade is over and the medal ceremony for the marathon winners is taking place. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won gold earlier in the day. What a cool place to be awarded an Olympic medal.

  • And here is Nikola Jokić, not at the Stade de France, but at home in Sombor at the horse racing track, a day after leading Serbia to the basketball bronze medal in Paris. Because of course he is.

  • Now “We Are the Champions” by Queen is playing and the athletes are singing along passionately. Athlete karaoke is apparently exactly what it sounds like.

  • There are also lots of hand fans around, especially among the Americans who wear racing-style coats and long pants. In Paris it is currently 27 degrees, it is almost 10 p.m. local time. The sun has just set and the last light has left the sky.

  • There’s something called sports karaoke on. Probably a good time for a commercial break.

  • The crowd of US athletes dances excitedly, takes selfies and chats as the ceremony continues. A French athlete crowd surfs over a number of other members of the French team. The general mood is good-humoured.

  • Former Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir took over the mic from Mike Tirico and Jimmy Fallon for the NBC broadcast. Their perspective from their experience as Olympic athletes is always insightful.

  • There are US athletes on the field.

  • A look at Katie Ledecky and Nick Mead carrying the US flag. The entire US athlete delegation awaits their turn.

  • The delegations may appear smaller than they did at the opening ceremony: many athletes, especially those who competed early in the Games, may choose to return home early. Still, the crowd of Americans looks particularly large from the tunnel waiting to enter the stadium.

  • This is truly a celebration for the athletes who enter the field dancing and smiling, those with medals proudly displaying them.

  • Each nation initially sent two flag bearers into the race. Now the entire athlete delegation joins the flag bearers on the field to celebrate.

  • NBC anchors Mike Tirico and Jimmy Fallon make awkward small talk with Ledecky and Mead in their earpieces as they walk with the flag.

  • Katie Ledecky (swimming) and Nick Mead (rowing) have just entered the Stade de France with the American flag.

  • The parade of nations has begun in the packed Stade de France. Traditionally, Greece leads the way.

  • Tom Cruise’s mission to the closing ceremony

The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Paris will reportedly end with an elaborate stunt by Tom Cruise.

The plan calls for the “Mission: Impossible” star — or perhaps a stunt double — to rappel from the roof of the Stade de France to carry the Olympic flag. NBC’s broadcast will then cut to a pre-recorded video of Cruise flying from Paris to Los Angeles and then parachuting from the plane to the Hollywood sign, according to TMZ.

Cruise is said to have contacted the IOC about his participation in the closing ceremony and proposed performing a series of stunts during the event. The actor has previously been involved in Olympic processions, carrying the torch through LA to Athens, Greece, in the lead-up to the 2004 Games.

  • The flame will find its way from Paris to the Stade de France in the north of the city.
