Panthers lose to Chargers 26-3

CHARLOTTE — The problems may not have been as dramatic as the week before, but the results were the same.

The Panthers lost 26-3 at home to the Chargers and fell to 0-2.

While last week’s game in New Orleans was over quickly, this game was slower.

The Panthers held up well against the Chargers’ running game at the beginning and forced several turnovers on defense.

But like last week, they failed to achieve much on offense.

The team gained only 159 yards in total and managed only one of twelve third downs.

Quarterback Bryce Young was again held in check as the sophomore quarterback failed to get anything done early on. He had a cautious game plan, most of his early passes were safer and short in nature. His only deep shot in the first half was intercepted up the middle.

In the first half, he completed 8 of 10 passes for 22 yards, including the interception, for a passer rating of 39.6 in the first 30 minutes.

He finished the game with 18 of 26 passes for 84 yards and the pick, which corresponds to a passer rating of 57.2.

While that was happening, the Chargers continued patiently and methodically. Much like their 176-yard rushing debut last week, which was built on a couple of explosive runs, the Chargers were ready to wear down the Panthers.

They finished the game with 219 on the ground.

Running back JK Dobbins had 17 carries for 131 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown run, while Gus Edwards had an additional 18 carries for 59 yards.

That speaks to their style, but also to a defense that had to cope with the loss of Pro Bowl defensive tackle Derrick Brown last week due to a season-ending knee injury.
