Paid sharing on Disney+: What you need to know

This week Disney+ expanded to give its paid sharing program its users the opportunity to enjoy their Disney+ subscription together with a family member or friend by managing devices within a household.

These features and capabilities are now available in the U.S., Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Europe, and Asia Pacific, following a rollout in select markets this summer.

So what is paid sharing, what does it mean for your account, and how does it affect everything Disney+ has to offer? Here’s what you need to know:

How does paid sharing work?

Your Disney+ subscription is intended for use within your household, which is a collection of devices connected to your primary residence and used by the people who live there. But what about people outside your household? They’ll need to sign up and pay for their own subscription or be added to your account as an additional member for an additional monthly fee to continue using Disney+.

Wait, how do I add someone outside my household to my subscription?

Account holders who wish to add someone outside of their household to their Disney+ subscription can do so with the “Extra Member” add-on. For example, in the US, an Extra Member profile costs an additional $6.99 per month for Disney+ Basic subscriptions and $9.99 per month for Disney+ Premium subscriptions. Note that only one Extra Member slot is available per account*.

*Extra Member is not currently available to Disney Bundle subscribers or subscribers billed through our partners.

Is there an alternative to the Extra Member add-on?

As an alternative to the Extra Member, people outside your household can purchase their own subscription to watch Disney+. As an account holder, you can transfer an eligible profile to a new subscription or Extra Member to retain that profile’s Disney+ viewing history and settings. Note that certain profiles – including primary (account holder) profiles, minor profiles, and Junior Mode profiles – cannot be transferred.

Okay, so can I watch Disney+ outside my household?

Yes, when you’re away from home or on the go, as an account holder or member of your household you can still watch Disney+ on your supported devices.

If you are on the move and see the message This TV does not appear to belong to the household of this accountyou can define yourself as I’m not at homeor choose UPDATE BUDGET if you have recently moved and need to reset the household location for your Disney+ subscription. This selection requires a one-time password that will be sent to the email address associated with the account.

Is there anything else I need to consider when choosing a paid sharing option for Disney+?
