Packers stock report after preseason win over Browns

The stock exchange is back in operation.

No, I’m not a broker and I’m not going to make you any money. However, the Green Bay Packers have to be optimistic after their 23-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday.

While some players performed strongly against the Browns, others still need to step up a gear.

There are more opportunities. Between now and the roster reduction on Aug. 27, the Packers will have a joint practice and preseason game at the Denver Broncos next week and at home against the Baltimore Ravens the following week. Coach Matt LaFleur is studying for next Sunday.

With that in mind, here are the players rising and falling in our latest Packers stock report.

Stock up: QB Jordan Love

To put it briefly, like Jordan Love’s preseason debut, last year coach Matt LaFleur let his starters play in the preseason because he felt he had to get them game practice. Now he doesn’t feel that way. Certain players get certain privileges during the preseason. It looks like Love has joined that fraternity.

Increase: DE Lukas Van Ness

Of all the players who played on Saturday, Lukas Van Ness was possibly the best player on the field.

Van Ness sacked Jameis Winston on the first defensive series of the game, the first of his three tackles that resulted in a loss of yardage.

Van Ness missed a chance for another sack when Cleveland’s backup quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was able to spin free. Had Van Ness finished that play, the excitement surrounding him would have been even greater.

Van Ness has had a solid training camp and appears to be someone who can make the big jump in year two that a draft-and-develop franchise relies on.

Add: S Evan Williams

Evan Williams doesn’t do anything but make plays. It feels like he intercepted a ball every other day in training camp and was at least always near the ball.

Williams was able to translate this into a game situation. On the first play of the third quarter, Williams stripped Cleveland running back John Kelly of the ball, giving the Packers excellent field position.

Williams had six solo tackles, including an impressive one in open space where he lost his helmet.

Williams appears to be behind Javon Bullard for the starting spot alongside Xavier McKinney, with the ability to always be near the ball and still be ready to play reminiscent of Adrian Amos during his prime years in Green Bay.

If Williams is anywhere near as successful as Amos was during his time in Green Bay, the Packers would have a hit in the fourth round.

Add: WR Grant DuBose

Grant DuBose, drafted in the seventh round last year, spent his rookie season on the practice squad. It’s rare for general manager Brian Gutekunst to release one of his draft picks, but DuBose got caught up in a numbers game as a receiver.

This year, DuBose seems to be taking matters into his own hands. On Saturday, he was Green Bay’s best receiver and played a lot of snaps. He played in a game every day in training camp.

Green Bay’s top four receivers are unquestionable. Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson and Dontayvion Wicks will not only make the roster, but will also play a huge role in the offense.

Who will be the fifth receiver? Bo Melton was the favorite, and that could still be the case. However, DuBose had a better training camp than Melton and Malik Heath.

This is a battle that could go back and forth until the end of training camp, but DuBose has opened the eyes of some, including his starting quarterback.

“Grant has played every day since we started camp,” Love said after the game. “He’s controlled what he can control, made great plays, knows his job and is a great player.”

Increase: Emanuel Wilson

Emanuel Wilson is picking up exactly where he left off last year as the league’s best runner in the preseason.

While Wilson didn’t have the spectacular play he did in last year’s season opener, when he scored an 80-yard touchdown in Cincinnati, he was the Packers’ best running back in Cleveland.

In 13 attempts, he averaged 5.2 yards per carry and scored once.

Wilson is part of a crowded running back room.

Josh Jacobs is the undisputed starter.

Marshawn Lloyd left the game with a hamstring injury but will be added to the roster after the Packers spent a third-round pick on him in April.

AJ Dillon’s contract does not include a guaranteed salary. The Packers could move on relatively easily, but there are no signs that Dillon has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff or management. His ball security and pass protection skills make him a reliable role player.

Share price dropped: WR Bo Melton

If one of your competitors’ stocks goes up, there’s a good chance yours will go down.

This was the unfortunate reality for Bo Melton in Saturday’s game. Melton had more drops (two) than receptions (one).

Meanwhile, DuBose had one of the best days of any player on the field.

Melton seemed to be the leader in the locker room for the job as the team’s fifth receiver. One bad day won’t change that, but with the rest of the roster becoming more and more competitive, players on the roster bubble can’t afford to pile up too many bad days in a row.

Melton has to recover next week.

Share price dropped: RB AJ Dillon

According to anyone who could speak in front of a microphone, AJ Dillon came to camp in the best shape of his life.

Saturday was Dillon’s first chance to wash the bitter taste of a bad 2023 season from his mouth.

Dillon only managed one series and his blocking didn’t help him, but Dillon managed 2 yards on four attempts.

That won’t achieve anything.

Dillon doesn’t appear to be in danger of losing his job, but one can’t help but wonder from Saturday’s performance whether Wilson, last year’s preseason hero, is more explosive and therefore a better fit as Jacobs’ replacement.

It will be interesting to see how much, if any, Dillon plays next week. If he plays more snaps, that could shed light on whether he loses ground to Wilson.
