Packers ready to face new opponent in training near Denver

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (WBAY) – The Green Bay Packers are in Colorado to increase the intensity of their preseason training with a joint practice Friday before their second preseason game under the lights Sunday night.

Last year, cornerback Eric Stokes visited the Mile High City after being injured for nearly a year, only to injure his hamstring right afterward. He’s tried to put that bad memory behind him and is looking to build a new life with this week’s work in Denver.

“I love them. I love them. As a competitor, I love them. It brings out the dog in you. See who really wants it and cares. See who is really a dog. Who is going to come out here day in and day out and fight? Wait, let me take that back. I got in a fight two years ago. I can’t do that again,” Stokes said.

Rookie safety Evan Williams said, “It’s always fun to compete against our offense, but with the amount of reps we get, sometimes it can get boring seeing the same scheme over and over again. Going up against a couple of different guys and going full throttle.”

The battle for a starting spot opposite Xavier McKinney is becoming increasingly exciting. Javon Bullard is often used in the 1s, but Williams is making good progress and second-year pro Anthony Johnson is also attracting attention.

“I think all of those guys are doing a pretty good job. We’re letting it go. I know you guys wanted to know yesterday, but I told you, don’t pay attention to those depth charts. They don’t mean anything right now,” said head coach Matt LaFleur.

“It’s unbelievable. That’s what you want in a room. That’s what you want. Guys working day in and day out to do their best and just competing at a high level. When someone inspires each other, it makes you want to play too,” Bullard said.

The joint training begins on Friday at 10 a.m. Mountain Time or 11 a.m. Central Time.

Sunday’s show begins at 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
