Packers’ new defense fails in first test of 2024 season

Those who expected immediate results from Matt LaFleur’s move to the defensive coordinator position were likely disappointed in Week 1 after the Green Bay Packers defense under Jeff Hafley gave up 34 points and over 400 yards to the Philadelphia Eagles in a season-opening loss.

Hafley, calling the plays in his first game as NFL defensive coordinator, did not find sufficient answers for the Eagles’ star cast.

Saquon Barkley ran for 109 yards and scored three total touchdowns. AJ Brown caught a 67-yard touchdown pass and had over 100 receiving yards. Together, Brown and Devonta Smith had a total of 12 catches and over 200 receiving yards.

Afterward, LaFleur expressed his displeasure with both the disruptions caused by the pass rush and the gap integrity of the run defense. The Packers sacked Jalen Hurts just twice and Barkley was able to make several big gains.

Three turnovers couldn’t even save the performance. The Packers managed two turnovers in the first quarter – one through an interception by Xavier McKinney on third-and-long on the opening series and another through a botched snap – and the defense even scored points in the second half through Jaire Alexander’s interception in the end zone.

It didn’t matter, though. The Eagles made it to the red zone six times, got 25 first downs, rushed for 144 yards and finished with 410 total yards while controlling the football for nearly 33 minutes.

After settling back in after the first two turnovers, the Eagles scored on four consecutive possessions. They would have scored three straight points and tied the game had Hurts not made the foolish decision to throw the ball back across his body to the middle of the court in the red zone.

As usual in Week 1, there were missed tackles and penalties on both defenses. The Packers didn’t tackle top playmakers nearly well enough. And two questionable penalties – one on Alexander and one on Kenny Clark – extended the Eagles’ final drive.

The Packers offense gifted the Eagles a 24-yard touchdown drive after a Jordan Love interception. And it was no easy game for the Eagles, who averaged 3.8 yards per run and 5.5 yards per play. Hurts’ passer rating was 80.3. Against a talented offense, the Packers will take those numbers with them.

But the defense conceded 31 points between the second and third quarters and collapsed.

Under Joe Barry, the Packers allowed just 34 points last season, their highest total, and Hafley’s defense matched that number in Week 1.

A vaunted defensive line was no match for a top-notch offensive line, and Brown and Smith were able to largely shut down the Packers’ secondary, especially in a few key spots. Add in another productive performance from Barkley against Green Bay, and the Packers’ revamped defense — despite the takeaways — has largely been a flop in the season opener.
