Packers contact free agent QB Ryan Tannehill after Jordan Love’s injury: sources

A day after Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love was diagnosed with an MCL sprain, the team has reached out to free agent Ryan Tannehill, according to league sources. There is currently no agreement in place.

Tannehill, who spent the last five seasons with the Tennessee Titans, became a free agent last offseason after his contract with Tennessee expired. The 36-year-old was injured and was replaced as the starter in 2023 by Will Levis.

Tannehill told The athleteDiana Russini said on a July episode of Scoop City that “the situation would have to be right” for him to join a team.

The Packers are looking for reinforcements at quarterback after Love was injured in the final seconds of the team’s Friday night loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

In the 34-29 loss, Love completed 17 of 34 passes for 260 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. It was his first start since signing a four-year, $220 million contract extension in July. The deal made Love the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, a record only surpassed by Dak Prescott’s new contract with the Dallas Cowboys, which he signed on Sunday.

On Friday, Love was replaced for the final two plays by Malik Willis, who was one of Tannehill’s backups in Tennessee. In 12 career games, Willis has thrown for 350 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions.

In eight starts and 10 appearances with the Titans in 2023, Tannehill threw for 1,616 yards and four touchdowns with seven interceptions and completed 64.8 percent of his passes, his lowest mark since arriving in Tennessee. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Miami Dolphins, who drafted him No. 8 in the 2012 NFL Draft.
