Over 140 complaints filed after opening of Ford Amphitheater, neighbors react to noise levels

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — After a jam-packed weekend at the brand new Ford Amphitheater, where local favorite OneRepublic performed three different shows, residents who live near the new venue are reporting their varying experiences with noise levels — all from the same neighborhood.

The City of Colorado Springs confirmed that it received 144 noise complaints beginning August 8, 2024, in the run-up to the grand opening weekend at the Ford Amphitheater, which attracted over 24,000 fans.

Despite the numerous complaints, the venue’s owner says he is adhering to his agreement with the city of Colorado Springs regarding noise levels. Meanwhile, homeowners living nearby told KRDO13 they have had mixed experiences with the noise coming from the venue into their homes.

Homeowners like Matt Schovel, who lives just a mile from the amphitheater, said he initially prepared for the worst.

“We expected it to be loud, especially on Friday night,” explained the 24-year-old resident of his house, which borders North Gate Boulevard.

However, Schovel said he was pleasantly surprised.

“On Saturday evening I deliberately sat outside because I wanted to hear the music, and (then) we didn’t.”

A family living just ten houses away from Schovel, whose backyard also faces North Gate Boulevard, had just the opposite experience.

“We could hear the music through our windows, with the windows closed, we could hear it through the whole house and with the fans on as we tried to go to bed. It was really quite loud,” said Genesis, who explained that Thursday’s soundcheck was the worst of the weekend, but on Saturday the noise level was high again.

Others, like Dan Van Buren, who lives just a block from Genesis and Schovel, acknowledged that it got pretty loud at times over the weekend, but he felt the noise was much muffled in his house and that he noticed changes in the volume over the course of the weekend.

“Overall, I think they did a pretty good job of soundproofing. I think there are probably some gaps in their sound barrier that allow sound to penetrate,” Van Buren said.

He adds that he would prefer to have peace and quiet in his neighborhood and that he wants to give his children a chance to sleep during weekday concerts since school starts this month. However, he also says he understands what this venue means to the city of Colorado Springs and that you can’t please everyone.

All three residents KRDO13 spoke with on Monday agree that their feedback, as well as that of the dozens of noise complaints, should be heard by concert organizers and the city.

“This could be a compromise that would not impact them as a company and at the same time would also benefit the community,” Van Buren explained.

The venue’s owner responded to KRDO13 regarding residents’ concerns about noise levels as follows:

“After monitoring noise all weekend, we were 100% in line with our commitments made in the PUD with the City of Colorado Springs. All of our noise mitigation measures are working and functioning properly. We will report this information to the City as they have requested and as we have committed to in our PUD.”
