OT Trent Williams and 49ers reportedly finalize new deal to end strike

Trent Williams is traveling to San Francisco to reportedly sign a new contract with the 49ers, his agency announced on X on Tuesday morning.

A new contract would ensure that the 11-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle will be in uniform for Monday night’s Week 1 game against the New York Jets, ending Williams’ absence from the team throughout training camp.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the 36-year-old, who was the NFL’s best pass-blocking tackle with a 95.8% pass-blocking win rate, has amassed over $4 million in fines for missing practices and his team’s three preseason games.

The reason for Williams’ staying power is that he has three years left on his contract but no guaranteed salary left, part of a six-year, $138.1 million deal he signed in March 2021.

A new deal for Williams would end the second contract dispute 49ers general manager John Lynch has had to deal with this offseason. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk sat out training camp and was nearly traded before agreeing to a new four-year, $120 million deal last week.

Although Christian McCaffrey was not a holdout, he also had a contract with no remaining guaranteed salary during the offseason, but eventually signed a new two-year, $38 million contract extension with $24 million guaranteed in June.

In addition to his double-digit Pro Bowl appearances, Williams is also a three-time First Team All-Pro and a 2015 Second Team All-Pro. He was the fourth overall pick out of Oklahoma in 2010 and is entering his 14th NFL season. He began his career with Washington and has been with the 49ers since a 2020 transfer.
