Orlando Bloom presents Katy Perry with the MTV VMAs Vanguard Award

Katy Perry hosted her biggest fan on Wednesday when she accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

The 143 After a sweet introduction by her husband Orlando Bloom, the artist presented an energetic 20-minute set of some of her biggest hits at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.

“You fell in love with her as Katy Perry. I fell in love with her as Katherine Hudson,” he began. “You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humor to every song she writes and every music video she creates.”

“I know her as a mother, as a partner, who brings that same love and joy to our family. In moments when we needed it most, her music and the remarkable world she creates have evoked a sense of joy and laughter and inspired generations of people around the world. She loves with all her heart and that is somehow irresistible. I see it reflected everywhere in our home, in her love for her work, but especially in her love for her fans. Congratulations on this honor baby, I am so proud of you. 143!” Bloom added.

Bloom presented his wife with the award after serving up a medley of her songs “Dark Horse,” “ET,” “I’m His, He’s Mine” featuring Doechii, “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “I Kissed a Girl,” “Firework” and “Lifetimes,” all of which she performed “on the first day of my period.”

“Who’s going to look after my daughter after the wedding?” Perry joked, and Bloom replied, “Oh, I thought so.”

Perry said in her speech, “Thank you to MTV for believing in my craziness from day one and helping artists expand their worlds beyond a song. There are so many things that have to come together to have a long and successful career as an artist. There are no decades-long coincidences.”

She thanked her longtime team at Direct Management, her label Capitol Records, her parents, family, Myspace, Warped Tour and “all the past places where I found a voice, identity and community so early on. Thank you to my friends who were there when my Jetta was repossessed. My Katy Kats for standing by me throughout my life and the LGBTQ community for who I wouldn’t be here without and for showing me that you can be both kind and s—. Thank you to Orlando for holding me up, celebrating me and doing the dishes. And finally, for my Daisy, the only flowers I’ll ever need.

“I’m thrilled when I look at the music scene today and see all the amazing young artists who are acting confident, self-assured, vulnerable and authentic. I’ve heard a lot of, ‘Do this, don’t say that, wear less, wear more now, hey, don’t cut your hair.’ One of the main reasons I’m standing here now is because I’ve learned to tune out all the noise that every single artist in this industry has to constantly battle, especially women. I just want to say from the bottom of my heart: do whatever it takes to be true to yourself and your art. Turn off social media, take care of your mental health, stop, touch some grass… and do what you were born to do, like I was born to do,” Perry added.

Perry releases her seventh studio album 143 on 20 September, their first in four years after 2020 Smile.
