OpenAI expands the availability of the O1 model – here you can find out who gets access and how much

ChatGPT has consistently generated high-quality responses and improved its quality through updates with newer models. Last week, OpenAI introduced an even more powerful model, o1, but there were limitations on who could access it and to what extent. OpenAI has now expanded the availability of o1 to deliver on both fronts.

On Monday, OpenAI announced via an X-post that due to high interest, it had increased the o1-preview and o1-mini limits for Plus and Teams users. The o1-mini limits were increased sevenfold, from 50 messages per week to 50 per day. Since o1-preview is a bit more expensive, OpenAI increased that rate a bit less, increasing the limits from 30 messages per week to 50 messages per week.

These higher limits require a ChatGPT Plus membership of $20 per month; however, if you rely on coding for your daily workflow, the investment may be worth it. ZDNET’s David Gewirtz tested o1-preview and was impressed by its ability to handle several complex tasks with lots of detail, including writing a WordPress plugin, rewriting a string function, finding a pesky bug, and more.

Even if you are not a coder, developer or programmer, you can still benefit from the advanced reasoning capabilities of the o1 models as they process your query for longer before generating an answer, resulting in more thorough responses to complex prompts. Since o1-preview and o1-mini do not offer web browsing and media uploading features, GPT-4o is still a better alternative for most general queries.

At launch, ChatGPT Plus and Teams users were given priority access. The company said both models will be available for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu early this week, and o1-mini will be available to all ChatGPT-Free users with no exact date set.

Although this announcement was made just a week ago, access has already been rolled out to ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu and free users.

If you’re a free user and want to access it, go to the model selector switch at the top of your ChatGPT homepage, click on “Alpha Models” and select o1-mini. If you don’t see it there, it may be because it hasn’t been made available to you yet. At the time of writing this article, I had access to it through my free account.

The limit for free users remains unclear, but it’s safe to assume it’s lower than the limit for subscribers, so it might not be the best option for people looking to integrate it into their workflows. However, it’s a great way to try it out for free and see what OpenAI’s latest model is all about.

If you are an Edu or Enterprise user, you can access both o1 models from the same switch, except you can skip the “Alpha Models” step and click directly. To become an Edu or Enterprise member, you will need to contact OpenAI’s sales team, as the subscription is not a la carte like Teams and ChatGPT Plus.

Educational and corporate users can greatly benefit from this model as the enhanced reasoning capabilities are particularly useful for research and advanced coding projects and simply ensure greater accuracy when relying on the chatbot’s assistance.
