Michigan residents can use a new online service to transfer vehicle titles.

Cheri Hardmon, a U.S. State Department press secretary, said the service could be used by people buying or selling vehicles themselves, without going through a car dealer or having parents transfer their car into a child’s name.

The main reason for offering the service online is to make the process faster and easier, Hardmon said.

“We expect most people with eligible property transfers will use this new online option,” she said. “If an online or self-service option is available, most people will use that option.”

The process isn’t instant and can take up to three days to get approved, she said, but it means there’s a system of checks and balances in place, and people don’t have to take the time to show up in person.

According to a press release from the Michigan Department of State, applicants must still have the same documentation that would be required if they were to visit in person.

It is also limited to cars, minivans, SUVs, motorcycles, pickup trucks or vans.

Sam May, press secretary for the Michigan Department of State, said this is part of a larger goal of the department – ​​to make services more accessible.

“Now, all visitors at every branch across the state are out in an average of 20 minutes or less as we continue to make our services more convenient … for all Michiganders,” May said.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 60% of all transactions are now carried out without a visit to the office.
