One-year-old Sacramento boy dies when car crashes into tree on Interstate 5, injuring driver and 3-year-old

A Sacramento toddler was killed in a traffic accident Thursday after a driver failed to negotiate a curve on an exit ramp near Interstate 5 in central California and crashed into a tree, according to the California Highway Patrol.

As a result of the accident, the driver and a three-year-old male passenger also had to be taken to hospital with injuries.

A 28-year-old Sacramento woman was driving a 2022 Kia Forte south on Interstate 5 approaching the Coalinga Avenal rest area, the CHP said in a news release. She exited the highway, but CHP investigators said she failed to make the turn and fell into dirt and grass before the small SUV struck a tree.

Officials who were notified of the accident at 5:15 a.m. said a witness began to perform CPR on a 1-year-old boy who was also in the vehicle. The boy was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital, the news release said.

The Fresno County coroner’s office identified the boy as Amante Williams. He was three days shy of his second birthday, said Tony Botti, a spokesman for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver suffered serious injuries, while the three-year-old boy, also from Sacramento, suffered minor injuries, the press release said.

Drugs and alcohol could be ruled out as causes of the accident, the CHP said.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
