One of the most underrated crime thrillers has just fallen out of Netflix’s top 10 – and it’s based on a shocking true story
While popular films like Rebel Ridge and Uglies have dominated Netflix’s top 10 over the past week, a thrilling crime drama based on a true story has made a surprise appearance. It landed on the streamer on September 16 and currently sits at No. 7 (though it could climb higher). The film in question is American Gangster, and it seems to be finding a new audience on the streaming service.
Featuring an impressive cast including Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, the film takes you into the gritty world of organized crime and the complexities of law enforcement. This crime thriller was actually considered underrated in the 2000s due to the overwhelming focus on blockbuster franchises. However, now that it’s gaining traction on the big red streamer, it’s getting the attention it deserves.
But is the film worth streaming on Netflix even if it’s in the top 10? Here’s everything you need to know about American Gangster and whether you should add it to your watchlist…
“American Gangster” may be brutal, but at least it is realistic
American Gangster is a crime drama loosely based on the true story of Frank Lucas, a drug lord from Harlem in the 1970s. Lucas (Denzel Washington) rises to power by smuggling heroin directly into the United States from Southeast Asia, bypassing the traditional mafia-dominated supply chains. His business is incredibly profitable because he imports purer and cheaper drugs than his competitors.
The film also features Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), an honest and ruthless detective tasked with tracking down Lucas, and Detective Trupo (Josh Brolin), a corrupt narcotics agent who works with drug traffickers, embodying the moral ambiguity within law enforcement.
Frankly, American Gangster is relentless and the violence on screen is not for those looking for something relaxing to watch this weekend. The film stands out as a gritty, brutal depiction of the drug trade. From the very first scene, when Lucas watches his mentor Bumpy Johnson (Clarence Williams III) commit a gruesome crime, he shows no emotion, despite it being one of the most brutal moments ever.
Watch on
So yes, this film is not for the faint of heart, as most of the action doesn’t shy away from showing the harsh realities of the drug trade. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth watching. Denzel Washington’s performance alone makes this film a standout (and worthy addition to your list). He plays such a complex man who is both ruthless and cunning, but still doesn’t stray too far into the villain category.
Critics and audiences agree that this crime drama is worth watching. “American Gangster” has 81% on Rotten tomatoes with an even higher rating of 89% from viewers. Stella Papamichael of the BBC said: “A guaranteed shot of pure, heart-pounding entertainment.” Paul Byrnes of the Sydney Morning Herald put it simply: “One of the most intelligent gangster films.”
Of course, this film has its weaknesses, and these lie primarily in its unnecessarily long length (a whopping two hours and 56 minutes). James Kendrick of the Q Network Film Desk agreed that the length often dampens the action: “A fascinating crime saga with a lot of atmosphere and little momentum.”
Should you stream American Gangster on Netflix?
Is American Gangster really worth a watch now that it is in the top 10? I say yes, this crime drama is worth watching just for its strong performances, especially from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe, as well as its intense action (which may get brutal, remember).
However, be aware of the long running time; at over two and a half hours, some moments can feel a bit drawn out. If you don’t mind a longer viewing experience and appreciate deep, character-driven stories, then American Gangster is definitely a film to add to your streaming list.
