Olympic sports that should be marginalized | Olympic Games

It’s hard not to agree with Jonathan Liew’s suggestions for culling Olympic sports for Los Angeles 2028 (Less is more: The LA Olympics don’t need every sport, so we’re cutting your favorite, August 12). To his list of those eliminated should be added anyone who needs a jury to judge competitors on artistic interpretation, style, size of water splash, shots taken or clay pigeons shot. That should reduce the bill considerably. The size of the commentary and expert team would also have to be reduced to leave only those who actually know what they’re talking about.

Jonathan Liew has succumbed to the common misconception that sailing is a sport reserved for the super-rich. It really isn’t. Visit your nearest sailing club and you’ll almost always find perfectly functional and affordable second-hand dinghies for sale. I bought one for £150 and it’s brilliant. At my club in Kent, which is run by volunteers, there are close races every week between sailors who are united by their love of sailing and certainly not wealth. They know the rules and love watching the Olympic sailing events. Come along Jonathan – I’m always looking for crew and I’ll show you how it’s done.

Some very popular international sports are currently being left out, particularly snooker and darts. Why can this be? Are the wrong people playing and watching their worldwide tournaments? Can you imagine the exciting comments: “Just the last red with a black and it’s gold for Belgium” or “Double top and Great Britain takes gold”. But sadly I don’t think that will ever happen. Funny old thing, sport.
