Ohio State Football vs. Michigan State: Live game updates, results

The Ohio State football team is on a roll in Week 5 of the season, defeating Marshall 49-14.

In East Lansing, Michigan, against the Michigan State Spartans, OSU took an early lead as quarterback Will Howard repeatedly attacked the MSU defense.

The Buckeyes are 3-0. Michigan State is 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten.

Ohio State’s Jack Sawyer leads the Buckeyes early with three tackles. Sonny Styles has the only sack of the game. And Tywone Malone started tonight against Tyleik Williams, who is recovering from an unspecified injury.

14:04, second quarter: On the fourth-and-goal, Will Howard found tight end Gee Scott for a 4-yard touchdown.

3:59, first quarter: Ohio State has had success this season getting quarterback Will Howard into a rhythm early, and tonight he completed his first nine attempts before failing to reach Emeka Egbuka.

5:14, first quarter: Michigan State averaged 15.3 yards per play on its first three offensive drives of today’s game (kickoffs of 19 and 8 yards and a 19-yard pass from Aidan Chiles). Then the Buckeyes defense gave in and, among other things, managed a fourth down that gave the ball back to the Buckeyes.

9:15, first quarter: An unnecessary roughing penalty on tight end Will Kacmarek forced OSU to attempt a field goal on its first drive. The Buckeyes appeared to be on their way to success until the flag tied second-and-goal at the Michigan State 21. A few plays later, Jayden Fielding finally landed a 30-yard kick.

Ohio State quarterback Will Howard opened today’s game with 7-for-7 passes for 66 yards. His longest throw was a 29-yarder to Carnell Tate.

Michigan State defers to the second half and Ohio State gets the opening kickoff after today’s coin toss came up heads.

OSU’s traveling roster includes Will Howard, Devin Brown, Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholtz. The team’s fifth signal caller tonight is…Chad Ray.

It may be a surprise not to see Air Noland’s name there, but that almost certainly doesn’t reflect Noland’s performance in practice. This week he had his black stripe removed, a tradition that marks a player’s official acceptance to the Buckeyes. However, Noland is not listed on the injury report.

So this is most likely a chance to reward Ray, who is in his third year with the program, an invited walk-on in the spring of 2022 and a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and two-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree.

With game time just over an hour away, the Buckeyes are preparing for kickoff.

Ohio State comes to East Lansing with the third-best offense in the country. Michigan State ranks 92nd in the same category. The Spartans are much stronger on defense and are No. 24 in allowing fewest points, an area in which the Buckeyes are the No. 4 team nationally.

Today, Kentucky won in Oxford for the first time since 1978, beating No. 6 Ole Miss 20-17. No. 12 Michigan held off a surprising attempt by Minnesota 27-24. And of course, the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes couldn’t be beaten in a 38-34 loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday, as the game ended in a final, controversial play.

The trend has been trending in this direction all week, so it’s no surprise, but still good news for OSU, that defensive lineman Tyleik Williams is healthy today. Without Williams, the Buckeyes struggled at times to contain Marshall.

Ohio State vs. Michigan State Predictions, Tips, Odds

Odds courtesy of BetMGM as of September 28th.

  • Spread: Ohio State -23.5
  • Over/Under: 48.5 points

Ohio State 48, Michigan State 10: Bill Rabinowitz of The Columbus Dispatch says: “Not long ago, the Spartans played Ohio State harder than anyone in the Big Ten. They ruined OSU’s 2013 and 2015 seasons. But lately the Buckeyes have dominated Sparty. and that should continue Saturday night, but the Buckeyes have too many weapons to keep them under control.

Ohio State 38, Michigan State 13: Joey Kaufman of The Columbus Dispatch says: “The Buckeyes are one of only five teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision averaging at least 50 points, but the scoring should slow a bit against the Spartans, who are much better on defense. ” After being one of the worst units in the Big Ten last season, Michigan State had a limited number of plays from scrimmage longer than 40 yards and put pressure on quarterbacks with 15 sacks in four games. Things are a little contended, but it’s still too early in Jonathan Smith’s rebuild for Ohio State to be a real threat.

Ohio State 38, Michigan State 10: Rob Oller of The Columbus Dispatch says: “After cutting through the “preseason” schedule like a chainsaw through balsa wood, the Buckeyes are finally facing some bigger guys. The Spartans won’t pose a formidable challenge on either side of the ball, but presumably their Big Ten talent is an improvement over what OSU experienced at Akron, Western Michigan and Marshall. “If nothing else, Sparty will make the tailback tandem of Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson work for their yards. Quarterback Will Howard beats Power Four competition.”

Ohio State 38, Michigan State 13: Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press says: “The Spartans give the Buckeyes a more competitive first half than in recent years. However, the physical toll of OSU’s front seven and the frustration of missed opportunities are already weighing on them. MSU’s offense falters in the second half as Will Howard beats an untested secondary and the Quinshon Judkins-TreVeyon Henderson doubleheader takes the road win.
