ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – A powerful storm system is spinning in the Gulf of Alaska as September approaches. The storm produced strong winds in Ketchikan, where it will remain windy through tomorrow.

Ketchikan could experience gusts of 50 to 60 mph tonight and early Tuesday. Another warning area is offshore in the Gulf of Alaska, where hurricane-force winds (sustained gusts of 74 mph) and high swells of 25 to 35 feet are likely.

Another storm is pushing through the Bering Sea and will slide south, on the flank of the current low. And another major fall low will impact the western side of the state on Thursday and Friday. This will create winds and waves that could cause flooding and potential problems for communities on Alaska’s west coast. The time to prepare for this storm is NOW.

South central – mostly dry. The effects of a storm will eventually occur towards the end of the week.

The Kenai Peninsula should be prepared for temperatures near freezing overnight and some sunshine at times Tuesday. In fact, with clear skies and moving into October, subfreezing temperatures are likely in many areas of the south-central.

The hotspot in Alaska was Cordova on September 30, 2024 with 62 degrees! The cold point was 15 degrees at Anaktuvuk Pass.
