Thomas Castellanos finishes the season-opening victory with 106 passing yards and 73 rushing yards

TALLAHASSEE, Florida. – Boston College earned its first win over a top-10 opponent in a decade with a 28-13 victory over No. 10 Florida State on Monday night.

The victory was the first of the Bill O’Brien Era, as he is the fifth consecutive BC head coach to earn a win in his debut on the Eagles sidelines.

quarterback Thomas Castellanos finished the game with 10 of 16 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran 14 times for 73 yards and a touchdown. BC finished the game with 263 rushing yards, led by Kye Robichaux 85 yards on 19 runs. Treshaun Ward covered 77 yards in 12 carries and also caught three passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.

After two possessions that ended in punts, the Eagles started the second quarter with a long scoring drive. Castellanos found the end zone from four yards out, capping a 14-play, 71-yard drive that ate up more than nine minutes on the Doak Campbell Stadium clock.

On the next possession, BC’s defensive efforts forced another three-and-out for the Seminoles and the Eagles’ offense went down the field once again and scored another point. Castellanos scored with Treshaun Ward with a 13-yard pass along the left sideline into the end zone, making the score 14-0 with 9:58 minutes left in the half. The duo had previously completed a 41-yard pass.

After FSU got the ball on a short field, Boston College’s defense held the Seminoles to three, led by a Donovan Ezeiruaku Sack by DJ Uiagaleiei on the second attempt and Came Arnold thwarted a possible touchdown pass on the third attempt.

The Seminoles scored a second field goal with less than 30 seconds left in the first half, making the score 14-6 at halftime.

FSU had the ball at the beginning of the second half, but Max Tucker got it back. The sophomore defensive back from Boston picked off Uiagaleiei’s pass on fourth down and returned it 57 yards into the Eagles’ red zone. Two plays later, Castellanos and Robichaux combined from four yards out to make it 21-6 with 11:58 left in the third quarter.

The Seminoles reached the end zone for the first time of the night with 5:19 left in the third quarter, cutting BC’s lead to 21-13. But the Eagles were undeterred and used their running game to pressure the ‘Noles, covering 60 yards on eight carries – capped by a two-yard run by Robichaux that made it a two-score game – 28-13 – with 1:03 left in the quarter. Boston College reached FSU’s four-yard line under the 2:00 timeout, but took a knee to run down the clock and seal the win.

The win ended a 12-game losing streak against top-10 opponents, with the last victory coming on Sept. 13, 2014 in the Red Bandanna’s opener against No. 9 USC.

Boston College returns to Alumni Stadium next Saturday when it hosts Duquesne for the 2024 home opener on Sept. 7. Kickoff against the Dukes is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
