This was a surprisingly simple connections puzzle even by current examples, although I still made a mistake. And a stupid one at that. I’m sure the NYT was trying to mislead me and I fell right into the trap. I’m talking about BLOODY, RARE, WELL DONE and MEDIUM, of course – which could have been “ways of cooking a steak.” But no, all four words actually belonged to alternative groups.
This quickly became apparent when I looked again and noticed that MEDIUM, MYSTICAL, ORACLE and PSYCHIC were all words for a CLAIRVOYANT (yellow) and that COLLECTOR’S ITEM, EXCLUSIVE, LIMITED and RARE all formed a green group for SPECIAL EDITION ADJECTIVES.
That left blue and purple, and this time neither was too complicated. No “empty something,” no clever cryptic connections – just a few groups that were both pretty obvious.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. You have to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The upside is that you don’t technically have to solve the final puzzle, as you can solve it by process of elimination. Plus, you’re allowed to make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little wiggle room.
It is a bit more complicated than Wordle, however, and has many ways to trick you. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that could obscure the answers.
It can be played for free on desktop or mobile via the NYT Games site.
