NYSEG offers meetings with customers as concerns about smart meters persist

BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) – All summer long, 7 Problem Solvers has been sifting through your calls and emails about your higher-than-usual NYSEG energy bills.

Most NYSEG customers reported that their bills increased after NYSEG installed smart meters in their homes.

I have researched this issue and spoken to several customers and NYSEG representatives. NYSEG has told me there is no correlation between the smart meters and higher bills.

However, due to ongoing questions and concerns from customers about smart meters, NYSEG has scheduled four meetings to go over bills with customers in person in response to our reports.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24

  • 12:00-2:00 p.m. — Clarence Town Hall, One Town Place, Clarence
  • 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. — Cheektowaga Senior Center, 3349 Broadway St., Cheektowaga

WEDNESDAY, 25 SEPTEMBER

  • 12:00 p.m.–2:00 p.m. — Depew Municipal, 85 Manitou St., Depew
  • 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. — Alden Municipal Building, 13336 Broadway St., Alden

“We are excited to offer our customers the opportunity to meet with us at different locations and times to meet their needs. We know customers appreciate the convenience of being able to speak to a customer service representative near them and we want to offer that and give them the experience they deserve.”

– Christine Alexander, Vice President of Customer Service for NYSEG and RG&E

At each of these events, customers can ask questions about their accounts and learn about resources to help them control their energy costs.

In addition, NYSEG will host a public meeting specifically on the topic of smart meters on September 26 at 4:30 p.m. at the West Seneca Public Library.

NYSEG told me there could be many reasons for higher bills, such as higher energy costs and increased usage.

NYSEG President and CEO Trish Nilsen told me last month that rates were increased to ensure customers receive quality service.

I then went to Depew and spoke with Cathy Sunderlin. She expressed her concerns about an increase in her bill since the installation of a smart meter.

“Someone needs to get to the bottom of this because the bills are outrageous,” Sunderlin explained. “How can I pay that much?” For more information, click here. You can view our report below.

I also visited Alex Efthemis at her home in Clarence. NYSEG had installed a smart meter in her home this summer. On July 24, her NYSEG bill was $108. Just 29 days later, on August 22, the bill rose to $327.

“There’s no way this can be right,” said Efthemis. “We’ve never received a bill this high.” For more information, click here. You can view our report below.

After our first three reports, questions and concerns persisted and we were able to sit down with NYSEG President and CEO Trish Nilsen. You can read more here and watch our entire conversation below.
