NY Mag reporter Olivia Nuzzi placed on leave due to “personal relationship” with RFK JR.

New York Magazine political correspondent Olivia Nuzzi has been placed on leave from the leadership after she entered into a “personal relationship” with “a former person relevant to the 2024 campaign” during her coverage of the 2024 election campaign, the magazine announced Thursday night. That person is reportedly Robert F. Kennedy Jr., according to reporter Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter. According to Darcy’s account, Nuzzi’s relationship with the former third-party presidential candidate did not begin until after she produced a profile of him in November 2023.

“Recently, our Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi admitted to the magazine’s editors that while covering the 2024 election, she had entered into a personal relationship with a former subject relevant to the 2024 election. This is a violation of the magazine’s standards on conflicts of interest and disclosures,” New York Magazine said in a statement released Thursday evening. “Had the magazine known about this relationship, she would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign. An internal review of her published work has found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias. She is currently on leave from the magazine, and the magazine is conducting a more thorough third-party review. We regret this breach of trust from our readers.”

A statement from Nuzzi was provided to CNN reporter Brian Stelter. It reads: “Earlier this year, communications between me and a former reporter became personal. During that time, I did not report directly on the individual or use her as a source.” The statement also says that the relationship was “never physical,” but that it “should have been disclosed to avoid the appearance of a conflict.”

“I deeply regret not having done so immediately and apologize to those I have disappointed, especially my colleagues in New York,” the statement concluded.

Kennedy, who suspended his presidential campaign in late August and endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump, has been married to actress Cheryl Hines since 2014. The “Drop It, Larry!” star played an active role during Kennedy’s presidential campaign.
