NY at Work report: Cost of living is the biggest problem

More than 65% of New Yorkers cite the cost of living as the most pressing issue facing their household, according to the ILR School’s 2023-24 New York at Work report, released August 22. The annual report provides insight into the state’s labor market landscape and includes data that highlights employment disparities across racial and ethnic groups.

The report also includes key findings, including that only 13% of employers consider rehabilitative factors when hiring people with criminal records. In addition, the average wage for child care workers in New York is 40% lower than the national average.

The ILR School continues its mission to improve labor relations and the lives of workers through research and policy analysis, with the goal of informing and influencing New York City’s labor policy.
