Notes on the 49ers’ disastrous loss to the Rams

Things couldn’t have gone much worse for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.

They lost to the Los Angeles Rams 27-24 after leading by 10 points with half a quarter to go.

Here are our notes for each quarter:

Welcome to the 2024 season, Jauan Jennings. Without George Kittle and Deebo Samuel, Jennings was the star of the first 15 minutes, catching three balls for 51 yards and scoring two touchdowns.

San Francisco’s offense was also well-balanced in this quarter. They ran 10 times and threw 11 times. Not surprisingly, nine of those 11 passes went to Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk. Jordan Mason and Eric Saubert also caught one pass each.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about this quarter is that San Francisco had the ball for 11 minutes and 41 seconds. Their offense looks different without Kittle, Samuel and Christian McCaffrey, but it’s clear they have a plan to overcome these losses.

Second quarter

For San Francisco, it was 15 minutes to forget.

Their defense allowed a 16-play, 87-yard touchdown drive, although it was never particularly difficult for LA. Matthew Stafford was efficient on short throws and the 49ers’ defensive line was pressured on the run game.

The 49ers’ subsequent drive after the Rams’ touchdown was a nightmare. Trent Williams was out injured and then LA’s defensive end Byron Young forced a fumble with a strip sack. He beat right tackle Colton McKivitz to the punch. The Rams recovered and the 49ers were knocking on the door of field goal range. Points at the end of the half would have been important, but instead San Francisco had to settle for a 14-7 lead after two quarters.

Maliek Collins made a sack early in the Rams’ offense, which stalled the offense and prevented them from scoring any more points before the end of the half.

San Francisco’s offense is in full swing thanks to Jennings, who caught four balls for 86 yards in the quarter, including a contested pass for 32 yards. A 31-yard touchdown pass to Jennings increased the 49ers’ lead to 21-7.

It’s a little concerning that the 49ers haven’t been able to get a stop against this version of the Rams offense. Their offense is still under a lot of pressure, but LA’s scoring drive was helped by a long penalty on Isaac Yiadom, who has struggled in recent weeks.

What a disaster.

The 49ers led by 10 points halfway through the quarter. Purdy looked indecisive in some key situations, perhaps because he is trusted by some of the receivers. On one play, Purdy seemed to have Brandon Aiyuk completely free for a deep throw, but he didn’t fire. Instead, he found Jennings for a short completion.

San Francisco’s defense also can’t stop a single attack. That’s been a problem all year and it was a problem again in the fourth quarter when the Rams scored the two points they needed to get back in the game and tie it at 24-24.

A drop from Ronnie Bell kept the 49ers out of field goal range on their final drive, then terrible punt coverage gave the Rams the ball at the 50-yard line, allowing for the game-winning field goal.

An absolute disaster quarter.
