LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – Storms that swept through Louisville in July damaged a Louisville nonprofit that was trying to help collect needed supplies.
SOS International, which collects and distributes excess medical supplies and equipment to those in need here and around the world, has lost its only delivery truck. The 16-foot box truck was damaged beyond repair and is critical for picking up and delivering medical items. The items are taken to social service agencies, shelters and clinics throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana.
SOS also uses the truck for back-to-school deliveries. In addition to medical supplies, SOS also provides health education, which the organization says reaches “more than 13,908 students” in Kentucky and southern Indiana.
According to SOS, the estimated cost to replace the truck is $80,000, and insurance will only cover a third of that cost.
The organization is paying for a rental truck to continue its work and meet what it calls the “critical needs of the community.” The group is asking the community to help with those costs. Anyone who would like to make a donation can do so on the organization’s website.
Since 1993, SOS has secured and redistributed over $66 million in medical supplies to over 108 countries and 300 community organizations across Kentucky.
