Nonprofit organization combines sports and business for children

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – A nonprofit organization wants to introduce young people to the world of business by combining sports and entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneur Centers 4 Youth was founded in 2013, but this is already the third year that they have been providing support to their entrepreneurs in raising funds in the athletics and sports sector.

The day was filled with speakers, vendors, sports clinics and a three-on-three basketball tournament.

An EC Youth board member says it is important to help build the future of our generation.

“We want to make them aware of the opportunities that are here, and there are plenty of them. We just want them to be able to take advantage of those opportunities,” said board member Trevino Reid.

EC Youth CEO and Founder Pleshette Grant says her drive and passion for this cause is simple.

“Well, I love working with young people and young people love money. So I know a lot of young people who want to start their own business. So I want them to know what to do with the money when they have it,” Grant said.

Her son, Evan Grant, has been a member of the program since its inception and explains why it is important to him.

“So I want to make sure that in the long run, you know that whatever you’re doing right now is somehow paying off,” he said.

He also says he learned from his own experience as a college athlete.

“I’ve been playing sports my whole life, you know, baseball since I was little, so I want to make sure I’ve done the right thing all this time and have something to do with it when I’m physically done with actually playing.”

The event took place from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Burke High School.

Grant says their next event will be in October and will focus on culinary skills and art.
