“No human replacement” – Microsoft changes terms of service to remind users that its AI services should not be taken too seriously
Following criticism of the accuracy of its AI tools, Microsoft is now warning its users not to put too much trust in its services.
The company has provided an updated service agreement that states that its AI should be viewed as a guide rather than a substitute for professional advice.
The updated agreement, which is set to take effect at the end of next month, also includes warnings about the health bots, as users fear they may place too much trust in the advice provided.
According to Microsoft, AI is not a substitute for skilled workers
Microsoft’s revised terms specifically address the limitations of assistive AI: “AI Services are not designed, intended, or intended to be used as a substitute for professional advice.”
The company added that Health Bots “are not designed or intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice or to diagnose, cure, mitigate, prevent, or treat any disease or other condition.”
The updates reflect the increasing use of AI tools in recent months following the introduction of tools such as ChatGPT and subsequent criticism regarding accuracy, data security and privacy.
The agreement also reiterates that Copilot AI Experiences, which is subject to Bing’s terms of service, may not be used to extract data through methods such as scraping or harvesting unless expressly permitted by Microsoft.
In addition, the updates impose stricter rules on reverse engineering AI models and enforce further protections: “You must not use the AI services to discover underlying components of the models, algorithms and systems.”
Microsoft also prohibits the use of its AI data to create or train other AI services.
While other Microsoft services have also been updated, the changes to the AI terms are a sign that the company is responding to liability concerns and more clearly managing user expectations. They also serve as a gentle reminder that AI technologies are unlikely to replace humans anytime soon.
