“No cell phones, no problem”: Ascension Parish students adapt to cell phone ban in Louisiana schools

A new ban on cell phones in public schools in Louisiana has led some to sign petitions to repeal the rule, while others are coming up with creative ideas.

Dutchtown High School in Ascension Parish posted a video clip on its Facebook page showing students dancing during lunch. The clip was captioned: “Fridays we get active during lunch! No cell phones, no problem!”

The post received hundreds of positive reactions.

St. Amant High School also shared a post showing the school’s librarians rolling out a cart of games and puzzles for students to use during their lunch shift.

“Grab a friend or make a new buddy over a game of UNO, Connect Four, checkers, board games, chess or even a challenging puzzle,” the school’s post said.

In one of the petitions, a student argued that today’s generation grew up with telephones.

The complainant argued that the lack of telephones could pose a safety risk in the event of an emergency.

It was also pointed out that many students use their mobile phones to relieve stress at school with music.

School district officials have stressed in the past that the system will continue to comply with all local, state and federal laws and regulations regarding student phone use.

According to policy documentation, students are not permitted to access cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, or headphones during the class day.
