No, breaking will not return as an Olympic sport at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles

At every Olympic Games, there are sports that stand out from the crowd. Enter breakdancing – also known as “breaking” – which made a hugely successful debut at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires and was eventually included in the program for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

As Breaking News makes its debut on the Olympic stage, fans are wondering if it will be back at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles. Here’s what we know about Breaking News’ Olympic future.

Will breakdancing be a sport at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles?

Unfortunately, the answer is no at the moment, as breakdancing is not currently on the schedule for LA 2028. However, there is still hope (!!!) that a successful launch in Paris could help it return at the 2032 Games in Brisbane, Australia.

According to Shawn Tay, President of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), “Our campaign for Brisbane 2032 entry has already begun and is ably led by our first Vice President and Australia-based Tony Tilenni.”

“The initial response from all participants to the recent presentations, including officials in Brisbane at the Australian Olympic Committee’s upcoming Paris 2024 Games celebrations, has been extremely optimistic about our chances of being accepted to these Games,” he added.

We hope everything goes in your favor!

Has anyone commented on the news?

For now, it seems like the breakdancers themselves are really just having fun at this year’s competition. “I’m just focused on the 2024 Olympics in Paris,” said Team USA’s Victor Montalvo (aka B-Boy Victor), the top-ranked male breakdancer from the United States in the world and the first to qualify for Team USA’s breakdancing team at the Olympics (according to vulture). “It was a shock for us to even be at the Olympics because we weren’t expecting it at all. So we’re just grateful.”

“I just want to make sure everyone understands what this dance is about and what hip-hop is about. Because it’s about peace, unity and fun,” he continued.

WDSF President Shawn Tay made a similar statement when he spoke about LA’s decision in May 2023, before the Paris Olympics. “Ensuring a successful Olympic debut for breakdancing in Paris 2024 is at the top of the WDSF’s agenda. Our performance in Paris will define the future of dancesport within the Olympic movement and it is imperative that we work together and do everything in our power to exceed expectations next summer at the Place de la Concorde.”

“We will show on the dance floor that breakdancing – a sport that is popular with young people from different backgrounds and based on beautiful values such as inclusivity – is a perfect fit for the Olympic Games.”

Which sports will take part in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles?

Good question! The Los Angeles Games will reportedly debut flag football and squash as optional sports, in addition to baseball/softball, cricket and lacrosse.

Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all we know about the future of breakdancing at the Olympics, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that it will be showcased on the global stage again in the future!
