No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide dominate Wisconsin Badgers

MADISON, Wis. — Alabama’s performance went from its bumpiest to its cleanest, which came as no surprise to coach Kalen DeBoer or his players.

A week after an error-ridden win over South Florida, No. 4 Alabama dominated Wisconsin 42-10, making big plays on both sides of the ball while limiting its own mistakes. The Crimson Tide, which had three lost fumbles and 13 penalties against South Florida, did not commit a single turnover, forced four fumbles and drew just four penalties in its first road appearance under DeBoer, who pointed to a series of sharp practices that “prepared us for success.”

“It just takes time,” DeBoer said. “Everyone has to get iterated, and we’ve been a lot more in sync this week, whether it’s today or all week, through our game planning. There’s some callbacks from play calls from last week or the week before, and we’re not just playing against our defense. We’re seeing different angles.”

Quarterback Jalen Milroe became the first player since Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick in 2010 to score multiple passing and running touchdowns in each of his team’s first three games. Milroe had three passing touchdowns and two running touchdowns, while Alabama averaged 7.3 yards per play and scored four touchdowns of 26 yards or more. Freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams continued his bright start with a 31-yard touchdown catch and a 47-yard touchdown, setting up another touchdown before halftime.

Milroe was able to avoid a turnover, as were his teammates, including running back Jam Miller, who had 71 rushing yards and a touchdown. Both Milroe and Miller lost fumbles to South Florida.

“After last week, I have to prepare myself to work even harder this week and every game for the rest of the weeks to protect the ball,” Miller said.

While Alabama defended the ball, four different Tide defenders forced Wisconsin into fumble balls, including two that the Tide recovered deep in Badgers territory and turned into touchdowns. LT Overton, Deontae Lawson and Keon Sabb led the defensive effort.

DeBoer expected a strong performance after a week of practice in which Alabama was in its “best rhythm.” Alabama also prepared for Camp Randall Stadium in Wisconsin by playing “Jump Around.” With a 35-10 lead going into the fourth quarter, the Tide players participated in the tradition.

“We had a tough week of practice listening to that jump song,” said wide receiver Germie Bernard, who caught his first touchdown for Alabama with 19 seconds left in the first half. “We were ready to fight off that weak jump song. We were standing on the sidelines, jumping up and just excited and enjoying the togetherness of our team.”

Alabama enters an open week before hosting No. 1 Georgia on Sept. 28. DeBoer said standout safety Malachi Moore, who left the game in the third quarter, is undergoing concussion protocol, but he expects him to return for the Bulldogs. Linebacker Qua Russaw is being evaluated after a lower leg injury.

“There’s just rhythms of play, plays and the way we communicate, just so many nuances that the big teams have,” DeBoer said. “We’re still evolving.”
