No. 23 USC and Miller Moss beat No. 13 LSU 27-20 with a game-deciding drive

Lincoln Riley and the Trojans leave Las Vegas with a win.

No. 23 USC surprised No. 13 LSU for a season-opening 27-20 victory on Sunday night in a thrilling game at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada. Trojans quarterback Miller Moss led them on a game-winning eight-play, 75-yard drive that lasted just over 90 seconds late in the fourth quarter and was capped by a 13-yard touchdown run by Woody Marks.

That score was also set up by wide receiver Kyron Hudson, who made a one-handed 20-yard catch with 18 seconds left. That put the Trojans in the red zone thanks to a targeting call Hudson drew on the catch.

Moss completed 27 of 36 passes for 378 yards and a touchdown in what was USC’s first victory as a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Trojans intercepted LSU one last time and secured the win with their final touchdown.

After a tough battle for the first 30 minutes, the two teams went into halftime Sunday night tied 10-10. Garrett Nussmeier rushed for 191 of his 304 yards in the first half and found wide receiver Kyren Lacy seven times for 94 yards and a touchdown in the first half. But it was USC and Hudson who made the biggest play of the first half.

Hudson made a wild one-handed catch that he somehow managed to keep from moving as it hit the ground, an early candidate for Catch of the Year.

The Trojans also made it back into the red zone at halftime, but had to settle for a second consecutive field goal. That put LSU back in front. The Tigers scored in the third quarter with a 13-yard pass to Aaron Anderson and then made a huge fourth-down stop to regain possession midway through the fourth quarter.

After several stalled attacks, USC quarterback Miller Moss launched a quick three-play attack, capping it off with a perfect 28-yard throw to Ja’Kobi Lane to give the Trojans a 20-17 lead late in the fourth quarter.

Although LSU immediately ran down the field, USC stopped them in the red zone and forced a field goal that tied the game with just under two minutes left. This enabled Moss’ final drive that gave the Trojans the win and handed LSU its fifth consecutive opening-game loss.

LSU will return home next week to host Nicholls. USC will next host Utah State in its first home game before traveling to No. 9 Michigan on Sept. 21.

USC now leads 20-17 with 5:44 minutes left in the game.

  • USC’s defense holds strong

Once again, USC’s defense made another stop and the Trojans will get the ball back. We’ll see if Lincoln Riley can put together a better drive this time after the last one fell apart.

  • USC stopped again

The Trojans made it to the LSU 35-yard line, but decided to run on third and six and were stopped in the backfield. They then tried on fourth and ninth and the Tigers nearly intercepted the ball.

That was a rough end to an otherwise very solid drive by USC and Lincoln Riley. LSU will now take the lead in the middle of the field.

LSU has the ball and is back on the offensive early in the fourth quarter. If USC doesn’t get a quick stop here, the Trojans could be in trouble.

  • LSU gets the ball back

This series was awful for the Trojans. They attempted a reversal of sorts that nearly ended in a fumble, and were pushed back almost to the goal line before having to punt.

LSU is back in control here towards the end of the third period.

  • LSU strikes back

And LSU can’t get anything going either, so USC gets the ball back. A pretty slow start to the second half so far.

USC starts at its own 23-yard line with 11:27 minutes left in the half.

  • USC punts immediately

Well, that was quick. LSU just shut down the Trojans and forced a punt less than 90 seconds into the quarter, so the Tigers will now take over at their own 27.

RB Josh Williams | 7 carries, 27 yards

WR Kyren Lacy | 7 catches, 94 yards, 1 TD

TE Mason Taylor | 6 catches, 47 yards

    USC

RB Woody Marks | 7 carries, 33 yards, 1 TD

WR Zachariah Branch | 3 catches, 47 yards

WR Duce Robinson | 1 catch, 38 yards

  • Halftime: USC 10, LSU 10

USC managed to drive just 63 yards down the field in about a minute to set up a final 29-yard field goal attempt before halftime, but they missed. Time management was also poor on this drive and the Trojans did not get a single shot into the end zone.

So the score is now 10:10 at halftime.
