No. 1 volleyball loses to No. 18 Minnesota in five sets

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – No. 1 Texas Volleyball lost the second game of the State Farm Women’s Volleyball Showcase to No. 18 Minnesota in five sets on Monday at the Fiserv Forum.

The Longhorns (1-1) turn their attention to their first home game against Indiana on Thursday at 8 p.m. at Gregory Gymnasium. The game will also be a celebration for the 2023 team, as they will unveil the national championship banner in a pregame ceremony.

Madisen Skinner And Jenna Wenaas both had double-doubles in the game. Skinner finished the game with 19 kills and 12 digs, which were the most on his team, while Wenaas had 13 kills and 19 digs.

Ayden Ames scored seven kills and seven blocks (a team high) and achieved a batting average of .389 in the game.

Emma Holder finished the game with 21 digs (his team’s highest) and added three assists and two aces.

Averi Carlson recorded her first double-double as a Longhorn with 33 assists and 10 digs.

Texas narrowly won the first set 25-22 to take an early lead. Skinner led the team with six kills in the opening set, while Wenaas added five kills.

The second set ended 9-9 before Minnesota went on a 4-0 run that put the Longhorns in a 13-9 hole. The Gophers held on to that lead until the end and won the set 25-19.

Minnesota took a 2-1 lead with a 25-20 win in the third set. Despite trailing for most of the game, Texas was able to narrow the lead to 23-20 at the end but was unable to complete the comeback.

Devin Kahahawai sparked a new momentum in the fourth set with three kills and two blocks, taking the game into the fifth set. The Longhorns dominated the set with four blocks and won 25-13. Texas trailed 10-8 before going on a 5-0 run and never looked back. The Longhorns closed the set with an impressive 7-0 run.

Minnesota took a big 5-0 lead in the fifth set before Texas went on a 3-0 run to cut the score to 7-5. But the Gophers came back and won the game 15-7.
