Hurricane activity has increased again after a brief lull in August. Since Helene’s landfall, three named storms have formed, leaving at least 128 people dead and hundreds still missing.

Hurricane Isaac and Tropical Storm Joyce developed in the open Atlantic without making landfall or posing a significant threat, and now Tropical Storm Kirk is following a similar path.

➤ Track all active storms

Meanwhile, two new systems remain active with a moderate chance of developing in the coming week.

This increase in storms comes as forecasters warn of a potentially record-breaking hurricane season, with 17 to 24 named storms expected, of which eight to 13 could become hurricanes. In comparison, in an average year there are 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes.

This year, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season has already produced 11 named storms, six of which have become hurricanes.

NHC is tracking Tropical Storm Kirk and two other disturbances

Tropical Storm Kirk is expected to dissipate into the open Atlantic over the weekend.

Here are the latest clues:

  • Tropical Storm Kirk: The storm is expected to strengthen into a strong hurricane by Tuesday evening, but will linger in the Atlantic and dissipate into a post-tropical cyclone over the weekend. There are no dangers to the area.
  • Malfunction 1: A system of disorganized showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop over the southwest Caribbean Sea later this week. A tropical depression could form toward the end of the week and move northwestward across the northwestern Caribbean Sea into the Gulf of Mexico. The chance of formation is 10% in the next 48 hours and 40% in the next seven days.
  • Disturbance 2: A system is expected to form this week located a few hundred miles south-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and moving slowly westward across the eastern tropical Atlantic. The probability of formation is 80% in the next 48 hours and 90% in the next seven days.

Hurricane Tracker: Are Hurricanes Coming to Texas?

Although there is a good chance that both emerging disturbances will develop within the next week, it is still too early to determine whether they will affect Texas.

Hurricane Kirk will have no impact on any country.

When does hurricane season end?

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, but storms may occur earlier or later than average.
