The Washington Commanders have consolidated an important part of their attack line.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Commanders have extended guard Sam Cosmi’s contract for four years and $74 million, including over $45 million guaranteed.

The 25-year-old is entering his fourth season in the NFL and has played in 40 games and made 32 starts. He was a second-round pick in 2021 and could have been eligible for free agency after the 2024 season.

Adam Peters, general manager of the Commanders, spoke about the signing and described Cosmi as a key player in the team’s offensive line.

“Sam has bought into the vision that (Commanders head coach Dan Quinn) and I have had for this team since day one,” Peters said via Zach Selby from Commanders.com. “He is a pillar of our offensive line and we believe Sam’s best playing days are still ahead of him. Sam is a great leader and teammate and we are excited to have him as a member of our team for many years to come.”

Cosmi spent his first two seasons as a right tackle, but moved to right guard for the 2023 season. The move paid off, earning him a contract that keeps him with the Commanders through the 2028 season.

The deal will align with the rookie contract of Jayden Daniels, who will be selected No. 2 in 2024, and shows how much emphasis the team is putting on him staying out of the pocket as he looks to develop into a franchise quarterback. That will be a difficult task after Washington allowed 65 sacks in the 2023 season.

Now that his contract is finalized, he will focus on improving line play to help Washington take a step forward.

The Commanders open the 2024 season on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
