NFL Power Rankings Week 4: Vikings and Steelers on the rise, Chiefs still at the top

The NFL is considered by many to be one of the most exciting sports leagues in the world. Part of the league’s popularity comes from the fact that any team can win or lose any game. The phrase “any given Sunday” is very real.

We’ve seen that in full glory so far this season, and it’s hard to make sense of some of these performances. There are a handful of 3-0 teams that look great and 0-3 teams that look awful, but the majority of the league is right in between.

Here are our updated NFL power rankings entering Week 4:

The candidates

1. Kansas City Chiefs (Last week: 1)

2. Buffalo Bills (Last week: 2)

3. Detroit Lions (Last week: 5)

4. Houston Texans (Last week: 3)

5. Pittsburgh Steelers (Last week: 7)

6. Minnesota Vikings (Last week: 11)

7. Philadelphia Eagles (Last week: 8)

8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Last week: 4)

9. San Francisco 49ers (Last week: 9)

It seems pretty obvious right now that the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are the two best teams in the NFL right now. Both are in the AFC, so there is no clear leader in the NFC right now. You would assume it would be the ninth-ranked San Francisco 49ers if they are fully healthy, but the third-ranked Detroit Lions are healthy and just pulled off a big comeback win on Sunday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are right up there with the best right now, but it’s their defense that’s taking the win. Justin Fields wasn’t bad, but he’s far from the reason they won. Every team in the top 9 is thinking about the Super Bowl right now, and they should be considering how they’ve started the season. There’s still a lot of football left. They’ll all have losses (like we saw with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and they’ll have triumphs.

Teams in focus

10. New York Jets (Last week: 16)

11. Seattle Seahawks (Last week: 13)

12. Baltimore Ravens (Last week: 12)

13. Green Bay Packers (Last week: 15)

14. Atlanta Falcons (Last week: 17)

15. Los Angeles Chargers (Last week: 6)

16. New Orleans Saints (Last week: 10)

17. Los Angeles Rams (Last week: 18)

18. Cleveland Browns (Last week: 19)

19. Arizona Cardinals (Last week: 20)

20. Dallas Cowboys (Last week: 14)

21. Indianapolis Colts (Last week: 25)

22. Chicago Bears (Last week: 22)

The teams in this league are strange. Most of them came in with the expectation that they would improve. Some of them were good, some were okay, and some were disappointing. This includes the Chicago Bears, who have a weak offense (though it looked better in Week 3) and an elite defense. Will they be able to get out of the hole they dug for themselves at the start of the NFC North?

The Green Bay Packers lost Jordan Love and are still finding ways to win. If they can keep this up, they’ll be back in the top 10 in no time. Are the Seattle Seahawks (3-0) cheaters because they’ve only beaten weak teams? Are the New Orleans Saints (2-1) finally coming back down to earth? We’ll find out soon. And then there’s the Baltimore Ravens (1-2), who finally won a game. Can they get back to the top tier where they started the year? In this league, anything is possible.

There is a lot to prove

23. Washington Commanders (Last week: 26)

24. Cincinnati Bengals (Last week: 21)

25. Denver Broncos (Last week: 30)

26. Las Vegas Raiders (Last week: 23)

27. New England Patriots (Last week: 27)

28. New York Giants (Last week: 31)

29. Miami Dolphins (Last week: 24)

30. Jacksonville Jaguars (Last week: 29)

31. Tennessee Titans (Last week: 28)

32. Carolina Panthers (Last week: 32)

The Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders put on a great show on Monday night. The Commanders, however, shocked the world and improved their record to 2-1. It may be a little disrespectful to rank them that low, but they have more to prove. The Bengals are 0-3, but you can’t write them off. They have played well in every game so far this year and have come up short. That includes Monday night’s game against Washington and an epic game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Coming back from 0-3 is tough, but they have the quarterback to do it.

The New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders both have big wins on their resumes but haven’t accomplished anything else and haven’t looked impressive the rest of the time. As for the Miami Dolphins, they’re on their third quarterback and can’t win without Tua Tagovailoa. The Jacksonville Jaguars look lost. Will Doug Pederson be the first coach fired? We’ll see soon. However, it’s hard to argue that the Tennessee Titans are worse than them at 0-3.

Also, a win for Andy Dalton and the Carolina Panthers (over a lousy Raiders team) isn’t enough to get out of 32nd place. Congratulations, you’re not going to go 0-17. Maybe the Titans or Jaguars will do it instead.
