NFL fans want Michael Penix Jr. to replace Falcons’ Kirk Cousins as quarterback struggles | News, scores, highlights, stats and rumors

After just two games into the Kirk Cousins era in Atlanta, Falcons fans are ready to move on to Michael Penix Jr.

Cousins struggled in the first half against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday, throwing for just 75 yards on 7 of 13 passes. He failed to reach the end zone and the Falcons went into halftime trailing 7-6. Their only points came on two field goals.

Atlanta gave Cousins a four-year, $180 million contract to get him in the Falcons uniform, but so far it hasn’t gone well. Given his struggles, Falcons fans suggested Atlanta use its first-round pick to replace the veteran.

As a lifelong Atlanta Falcons fan, I can attest that we ALL want to see Penix in the game NOW!!! #ATLvsPHI

Some criticized the Falcons’ decision to sign Penix so early, but if he replaces Cousins and succeeds, this choice could prove to be a wise one.

Penix was a star in Washington, throwing for 4,903 passing yards and 36 touchdowns, leading the Huskies to the national title game and becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist along the way. Whether his college success will translate to the NFL remains to be seen, but he could soon get a chance to show what he can do.

Despite it being his first game back from a season-ending Achilles injury, Cousins had a terrible start to the season in Week 1. He had 155 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions on 16-of-26 passing as the Falcons lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Performances like Sunday’s won’t be enough to help Atlanta out of its playoff drought, and another bad game could see the Falcons bench Cousins for Penix.
