The 2024 NFL season is upon us. We’ve cleared the final hurdles on the calendar, including training camp, preseason and roster cuts. The Kansas City Chiefs’ quest for their unprecedented third consecutive Super Bowl title begins Thursday, September 5 at 8:20 p.m. ET against the Baltimore Ravens on NBC.
Yahoo Sports is here to help you prepare for fall. Let’s dive in.
Where can I watch Yahoo Sports’ 2024 NFL season preview?
You can watch the entire show, hosted by Yahoo Sports’ Caroline Fenton and featuring Yahoo experts Nate Tice and Charles McDonald, and DraftKings’ Mike Golic Jr., here.
What’s new this NFL season?
Good question. Frank Schwab will tell you everything you need to know.
Star players at new locations
It takes a while to get used to a star player in a new uniform.
New York Giants fans (and Giants co-owner John Mara, according to Hard Knocks) might feel a little uncomfortable seeing Saquon Barkley in Philadelphia Eagles green this season. There are a few other big-name stars who will look strange on a new team this season.
Here are some of the biggest names to switch teams this offseason.
New head coaches and their ideas
A quarter of NFL teams will have a new head coach on the sidelines this season.
It’s even less if you don’t count Antonio Pierce, who took over as interim head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders last season after Josh McDaniels was fired. Pierce went 5-4 and was hired permanently for the job in January.
With or without Pierce, the move reflects the growing impatience of NFL team owners. The new coaches should all know that if they don’t win in their first few seasons, their spots will be hotly contested.
Here’s a look at all eight new head coaches for the 2024 NFL season and what will be new for each of those teams.
Schedule and broadcast changes, including Tom Brady
In 2023, 93 of the 100 most watched shows on television were NFL. We just can’t get enough of NFL games on our screens.
The NFL makes adjustments to the schedule every year while keeping an eye on its broadcast partners. Here are the most important changes to the schedule and broadcasts this NFL season.

Coming for the Kingdom
The Kansas City Chiefs are attempting something no team has ever accomplished: win three Super Bowls in a row.
The rest of the NFL is trying to stop them.
Here are the key elements of the Chiefs’ success that will play a role in their quest again – and could provide clues as to how other teams can dethrone the NFL’s kings.
How Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo stunned the NFL – and the Shanahan tree
The Kansas City Chiefs offense was inconsistent last year. Sure, they won the Super Bowl and finished in the top 10 in all underlying metrics, and Patrick Mahomes was still Patrick Mahomes. But it wasn’t a reliably efficient unit week in and week out in 2023.
What Was reliable and what helped the Chiefs in their Super Bowl run was the defense led by coordinator and longtime coach Steve Spagnuolo. Spagnuolo’s defenses during his tenure in Kansas City were generally secondary in the Chiefs’ hierarchy.
Thanks to his experience calling plays against dozens of offenses, Spagnuolo also has aspects of his defense that are perfectly suited to the current NFL landscape, as he has specific answers for offenses that come from the tree that is currently in vogue in the NFL: the Shanahan tree.

Names you should know
7 coaches on the hot seat
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has earned a reputation for changing head coaches at will. Quite the opposite is true.
Jones is unbearably patient with his coaches. Since Jason Garrett took over in 2010 after Wade Phillips was fired midseason, Garrett and Mike McCarthy have been Dallas’ only two head coaches. Inevitably, the Cowboys fail in the playoffs and everyone assumes Jones will fire his coach, but he has only fired a coach once in 14 years.
But that doesn’t mean McCarthy has a job for life. At some point, he’ll need more playoff success, or Jones will make a change. Does that mean he’s one of the seven coaches on the hot seat as the NFL season begins? Here’s our list.
10 potential candidates for the breakthrough
Not every NFL player can be CJ Stroud or Puka Nacua.
These two were fantastic as rookies and became instant stars. Other players need more time. Sometimes they get set back by injuries. Others just need a chance to play before they shine.
Every NFL season we see the breakthrough of veteran players, and here are 10 players who have a good chance of breaking through this NFL season, including two Detroit Lions and a quarterback from the 2023 draft.

Questions about the quarterback

Dallas Cowboys: Is this the Daniel Prescott Final in Dallas?
With CeeDee Lamb’s contract extension on the cards, Prescott’s contract extension will be a shadow over the franchise until a resolution is reached. Cowboys ownership has publicly stated there is no deadline on the deal, but it is highly unlikely Prescott will reach an agreement early in the season.
With contract extensions now free from Lamb talks, Dallas can focus solely on Prescott until Week 1 kicks off on September 8. While I don’t think it’s a good sign that a Prescott deal didn’t happen while the team was in Oxnard for training camp, I believe the order of things was set up so that Lamb’s contract extension came first, so technically a Prescott deal is still on the intended schedule.
For those seeking optimism beyond the completion of the Lamb deal, fans can also take heart from the fact that Trey Lance showed in the preseason that he is far from being an NFL starting quarterback. That five-interception finale should serve as a not-so-gentle reminder to owners of what it might be like to return to an abyss where there is no quarterback.
Another thought that should suggest a contract extension will happen in the next 10 days: There is no clear Plan B for Dallas in the event that Prescott leaves as a free agent. Any promising scenario will cost assets and money and still have a significant risk element (see Denver’s trade for Russell Wilson in 2022). The most obvious, lowest-risk move is still to sign Prescott to a contract extension. Just like last year.

Four Verts
The 4 most important players of the NFL season
One more week, just a few more sleeps. In a few days, the Ravens and Chiefs will start the new NFL season and the race to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX will begin.
Now that we’re in the calm before the storm, we’re taking a look at four players who will be some of the NFL’s most important players and how their presence can shape the league’s landscape. The group includes two big-name quarterbacks in new situations, an anchor in the trenches of a potentially explosive offense, and an understated star making a big change in the champions’ defense.
Check back on Wednesday, September 4 to see the four storylines Charles McDonald is most excited about.
