Former Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney reportedly worked out with the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, getting his first real opportunity after being released by Kansas City before the roster deadline.
Toney became an underdog for the Chiefs after they made a number of offseason additions such as Marquise “Hollywood” Brown, Xavier Worthy and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Seattle has a strong wide receiver corps in DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, but lacks proven depth outside of the top three.
The former first-round pick still has a ton of potential and is a sensible addition to a team like the Seahawks that could use a spark.
Although Toney’s time in Kansas City didn’t end well, it’s obvious why management and the coaching staff were excited about his talent. Brett Veach previously said Toney was the most talented receiver on the roster, and a cursory glance at his highlight tapes backs up that statement.
It’s not clear yet if Seattle plans to sign him. Either way, Toney probably won’t be out of a job for very long. His skills are rare even in the NFL, so some organization will talk itself into giving him another chance sooner or later.
During his two seasons with the Chiefs, Toney caught just 41 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, but he holds the record for the longest punt return in Super Bowl history. He also caught a touchdown in that win over the Eagles. Based on that success alone, the trade from Kansas City must be considered a net gain.
We hope Toney gets back on his feet and returns to the field quickly.
