Newsweek headline calls Trump’s promise to abolish taxes on tips “Kamala Harris’ tax proposal”

Newsweek’s misleading headline about Republican support for Kamala Harris’s policy of not taxing tips was dubbed “another reason to hate the media” online.

The publication published an article on Monday titled “Kamala Harris’ tax proposal gets majority Republican support,” detailing Harris’ renewed support for a ban on taxing tips for service and hospitality workers after former President Trump endorsed the policy in June.

“Considering that 68 percent of Republicans support the policy proposal according to our recent poll, the plan could help Harris persuade GOP voters unconvinced by Trump’s candidacy to support her in the November election,” Newsweek said.

Although the headline implied support for Harris’ plan, the article itself noted that the poll was conducted on July 29, before Harris’ announcement. The article also mentioned that the plan had been previously proposed by Trump and included in the Republican platform months earlier.

“The majority of Americans support plans to eliminate the federal tax on tips for service sector workers, according to an exclusive poll for Newsweek, which shows why Kamala Harris welcomed the policy plan first announced by her opponent Donald Trump,” the article said.

Biden and Harris reportedly support repeal of tip tax first proposed by Trump: ‘Copycat’

The headline, however, attracted the most attention, with X-users accusing the publication of trying to turn a Trump policy into a victory for Harris.

“That’s because it’s Donald Trump’s tax proposal,” wrote Spectator reporter Matthew Foldi.

Iowa State Rep. Carter Nordman agreed: “That’s because it’s literally @realDonaldTrump’s tax proposal…”

“Harris stole this idea from Trump. It’s not her proposal. That’s a crazy interpretation – even for Newsweek,” noted Rick Scott’s communications director McKinley Lewis.

“You mean Trump’s tax plan,” commented conservative politician Chad Felix Greene.

Doug Powers of Twitchy joked, “Hey Google, give me one more reason to hate the media.” Google:

“Shameless is an understatement,” wrote RedState writer Bonchie.

“OH MY GOD,” exclaimed former Republican congressional candidate David Giglio.

Critics say the mainstream press “showed zero self-respect” during Kamala Harris’ press blackout.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Newsweek and the author of the article, Giulia Carbonaro, for comment. Fox News Digital has also reached out to the Trump campaign team.

Trump himself has attacked Harris, accusing her of stealing his plan after she announced her proposal during a rally on Saturday.

“Kamala Harris, whose ‘honeymoon’ phase is coming to an end and who is slowly plummeting in the polls, simply copied my NO TAXES ON TIPS policy,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The difference is she won’t do it, she just wants to do it for political reasons! This was TRUMP’s idea – she has no ideas, she can only steal from me,” he added.

Trump’s campaign team coined the hashtag #CopyCatKamala later on Sunday.
