Newly signed Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt will not play against the Falcons

KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Running back Kareem Hunt, who was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad this week, will not play in Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, coach Andy Reid said Friday.

“We’ll see how it goes next week and where he is,” Reid said. “He’s been working out a lot with a scout team this week, so it’s been good for him to get out there and get back into the football part.”

“He did (well). He’s in good shape now. He’s got to have the opportunity to play a football game somewhere to tell you the rest, but he came in good shape, so that’s a plus.”

The Chiefs will use undrafted rookie Carson Steele, veteran Samaje Perine and Keaontay Ingram (who was promoted from the practice squad this week) at running back against the Falcons. The Chiefs signed Hunt to the practice squad after Isiah Pacheco was sidelined with a broken fibula. Pacheco was placed on the injured list this week.

The Chiefs selected Hunt in the third round in 2017, the same draft they used to draft Patrick Mahomes. Hunt had a great rookie season, rushing for a league-leading 1,327 yards, catching 53 passes and scoring 11 touchdowns.

He was on pace for another 1,000-yard season in 2018 when a video surfaced of him shoving a woman outside his home. The NFL subsequently placed Hunt on the Commissioner’s Exempt List. The Chiefs released Hunt, arguing that he did not tell the truth when questioned about the incident.

Hunt, 29, played the last five seasons for the Browns in his hometown of Cleveland, the most productive of those seasons being 2020, when he ran for 841 yards and caught 38 passes.

Last season, Hunt ran for 411 yards and caught 15 passes.
