Newark Police ask public for help in identifying cell phone theft suspect


NEWARK, NJ – The Newark Police Department is asking the public for help in identifying a suspect involved in the theft of a cell phone at Seabra’s Supermarket on August 18, 2024.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé, the incident occurred around 1 p.m. when the victim accidentally left his cellphone in a shopping basket after leaving the supermarket in the 200 block of Lafayette Street. Surveillance video shows a male suspect taking the phone from the basket and putting it in his pocket.

Newark police have released an image of the suspect from surveillance footage and are asking anyone with information that could help identify him to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Newark Police Division’s 24-hour Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All tips are confidential and a reward may be offered for information leading to an arrest.

  • Robbery suspects sought after violent attack in DC

    WASHINGTON, DC – Authorities are asking the public for help in identifying the suspects involved in a robbery that occurred in Northwest Washington in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 4. At approximately 3:49 a.m., the suspects approached and assaulted a victim in the 1900 block of Northwest 14th Street, then stole the victim’s property and fled the scene.

    The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The suspects were captured on surveillance video, which can be viewed here.

    Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to contact DC Metro Police at (202) 727-9099 or text a tip to 50411. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment.

  • Fatal motorcycle crash in DC kills driver

    WASHINGTON, DC – A fatal motorcycle crash occurred in Northwest Washington early Sunday morning, killing 30-year-old Southeast resident William Edwards Jr. The crash occurred at 3:27 a.m. when Edwards, who was riding a Suzuki GSX motorcycle without a helmet, collided with a black Toyota RAV4 at the intersection of 11th and U Streets.

    Edwards was traveling westbound on U Street at a high rate of speed and ran a red light, causing a collision with the Toyota, which was traveling northbound on a green light. Edwards was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
