New York local sales tax revenues nearly unchanged in July – Finger Lakes Daily News

Local sales tax revenues in New York State increased 0.2% in July compared to July 2023, according to data released today by State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. Overall, local revenues for the month were $1.82 billion, up $3.1 million from the same period last year.

“There was little growth in local sales tax revenues in July compared to last year,” DiNapoli said. “As local governments begin preparing their budgets for next year, they need to set realistic expectations for sales tax revenues.”

In July:

  • New York City’s revenues totaled $768 million, a decrease of 1.2%, or $9.1 million, from the same period last year.
  • In the rest of the state, county and city revenues totaled $946 million, an increase of 1.2%.
  • 40 of 57 counties recorded an increase compared to the previous year.

These monthly sales tax revenues come from cash distributions made by the State Department of Taxation and Finance to counties and taxing cities. The amounts are based on estimates of the taxes each municipality will pay. In the third month of each calendar quarter, these distributions are adjusted up or down so that the entire quarter reflects reported sales by merchants. The next quarterly figures (for July through September) will be available in October.
