New York Jets present a terrible varsity combination for Monday Night Football

As most of you probably know, the New York Jets have unveiled a complete set of new uniforms for the 2024 NFL season. (The team later announced that they will also wear a throwback Super Bowl III-style uniform later this season.)

What better place to unveil a new uniform than on Monday Night Football?

Last season, the Jets began their season against the Buffalo Bills, which also happened to be a Monday Night Football game. In that game, they debuted throwback white jerseys (from the “Sack Exchange” era) that would become the basis for this year’s new uniforms—and while they won the game, they unfortunately lost QB Aaron Rodgers to an injury after just four plays.

The team, now healthy and with Rodgers back, has a chance at a MNF rematch – both emotionally and team-wise – as they are the away team tonight against the San Francisco 49ers. With the Niners wearing their beautiful red jerseys with gold helmets and pants, the Jets could have created a fantastic uniform matchup by reinstating the white Sack Exchange uniforms (now their primary away uniform). Instead, their 2024 season will begin with green pants And socks.

Ugh. The Jets wore only white pants in the preseason, against Washington they were completely white and then against the Giants and Panthers they wore green over white.

I don’t mind the green pants (as long as they’re paired with the white jersey) — in fact, I think they look pretty good. And it’s nice to see a little twist on the “Sack Exchange” uniforms — the Jets never originally wore anything but white pants with those uniforms. It’s the green socks/leggings that look terrible with the green pants.

It’s not that the Jets haven’t worn green pants with green socks before — but not always. With their recently retired set, they occasionally wore white socks (even when they went solid green, they broke up the yoga pants look by wearing white socks/leggings).

When the Jets modified their original “Sack Exchange” uniforms for the 1990 season, adding some black accents and green pants, always Wear white socks with these green pants.

I understand if the Jets don’t want to wear the white pants with the white jerseys for opening night MNF (like they did last year) since they lost their quarterback for the season in that look. But if they insist on debuting the new green pants tonight, would it be too much to ask to pair them with white socks? I’m not even sure the team has a set of white socks, as every combination (except the BFBS replacement) was shown with green socks at the reveal.

Tonight’s game could have felt like a classic 1980s college rematch. Instead, the Jets will look like they’re wearing green yoga pants. Couldn’t they have saved that for another week instead of showing it in front of millions of viewers on the first Monday Night Football game of the year?

Again, I’m all for the Jets wearing green pants with white jerseys…I just wish they wouldn’t do it with green socks.
